Here's another thought: Displaying one o f these makes for less bad feeling and an ti-bike backlash than the typical " Down with the Sierra Clu b" type stickie. It's both good sense an d good politics . Down to the wire on Red Mtn./EI Paso The inpu ts are all in the hopper, as of J an uary 15. It 's now a matter of waiting for the BLM bureaucratic pasta-grinder to grind us out a land use plan for the EI Paso/Red Mtn , areas in the California desert. Or is it? Scores of concerned, hard-wo rking people submitted their responses to the BLM's draft plan - good st uff, no t just o pinion. Some, like UEA's Larry Langley, 0 -37 enduroer J erry Co unts, and o th ers, spent weekends in t he desert map pin g specific trails for inclusi o n in the "designated trails" areas of the p lan. Realize that what they were doing is unpaid volunteer effort, co mpared to staffers wh o are the fu ll-time unabashedly grinding their pet axes in the fields of biology, arc heology, minerolo gy and so il co nservation. What are t hes e volun teers ge tting for th eir efforts? A n indication of the way things/are going ca me durin g a joint meeting of die Na tional Outdoor Coalition b oard an d the BLM planning staff. Asked the specific question, "How many miles of been designated for trails have motorcycle use?," the planners answered , "None." "Could you repeat that?" asked NOC's Cathy Hay es (or words to that effect). "None." At which ti me, BLM's Neil Pfulb was said to have remarked flippantly:, "Well. they can ride the roads . .. Are we beating our heads against a wall ? At present, the Riverside and Bakersfield District Advisory Boards are scheduled to meet (see "Happenings") to develop their recommendatio ns on the plan, which will in turn be hashed over by the state board. These public mee tings will possib ly be o ur last chance to observe the decision -makers at work, and to make ou r opinions them, before the EJ known to Paso /Red Mtn. plan goes to final draft. If bikers are being given the shaft after walking t he seco nd m ile with the bureaucrats, we 'll soon kno w it. 0 Insert needle and twist '. An inside source (n ot a bik er , by the way) rela ted to CN that BLM's state di rec tor Ed Has tey , whe n he read t he follo win g p assage of NOC's El Paso/Red Mtn, resp onse, threw a gen uine te m per tantrum all over the office : "AlJfHORITY: We find a pervading te ndency ... to overl ook th e dictate to th e Bureau to fo rm u late m an agement p lan s based on the p rin ciples of multiple use [43 C F R I4 I5(b»).
