Bill Osen and Alle n J ohnson came in for second and third overall Senior ho no rs. The Amateur/Expe rts were spread out mo re than the Novice riders. Larry Roeseler agai n wo n the Divisio n I class. Rich ard Savarese was second and Mark Zolle r third. Mike Matlock was running three p laces behind Mark to finish 20th overall and first 175. Top riders in the 1 75 Amateur class were Chuck Green, Steve Chambers an d J im Harper, in t hat order. All th ree ran a close race with each other. It was quite some time before the trail bikes st ar te d co ming thro ugh the fmis h . J eff Ben nin gton was first Amateur, second place was ea rned by Ste ve Webb. Th e finish was co n fusing fo r both rider and spectator. So m e of t he Ama te ur /E xpe rts were flagged ou t onto t he co urse again , ins tead of on to t he finish. Dimond 'T 150 to Thornberg as Rolfs Husky says "no" By James Brammer PLA STER CITY, CAL. , FEB . 15 On the third lap of the Dimond T 150 desert race, Ro lf Tiblin tried to pass winner Bill Thornberg (360 WR Hus) but "the bi ke says no" and seized. Billy said , "that was my fastest lap and I knew I was winning fro m then on, fo r I co u ld see t he lea de r." He had started the race in row nineteen, Tiblin was fro m row 23. The starting order was one minu te between ro ws of six or eigh t riders. The p ack leaders on the first of five 30 mil es lo op s were Rick Finger, racing with Arnie Gruner , th en Rice Secor, Boy d Taylor , an d Lynn Brown wi t h Mark Braudaway (125 Yam ) 10th and Har ley rider Mike Hensel in 13 t h. ay lor (RM-2 50 Suz) lost seven m inu tes in the pits fo r a brake rep air , but at 60 miles ou t he was in third with Finger and Gruner still leadin g. Mike Hensel moved up to fourth and Braudaway was fifth . Finger (Hus) broke a rod on the third lap, Riblin seized, and Gruner (Hus) then led, th ough in clasped time, it was Thornburg's faste st . Fourth lap, Ta y lor was leading with Hensel (H-D 250) and Braudawa y next. Gruner ran out of gas, but fo un d a bottle to borrow some more and was back in the race in fifth. Unofficial: At the finish, ·Bo yd Ta ylor was the first man in, b ut Thornburg ar rived with an elasped ti me of four hours, 36 m inu tes an d 7 seconds to clearly win. Taylor was later disqualified for m issin g the t hird check o n the first lap . A lo t of riders missed t he same check, but most of t hem returned to it befo re co ntinuing th e race. Following at t he fini sh was Mar k Brau da wa y , winning the 125 Ex pe rt class and th en Mike Hensel taking the 250 Exper t class . Fift h man to arrive was Dennis Stevens, followed by Arnie Gruner, and th en t he 125 Junior class win ner, Dal e Dre utzer , Jr. on a Honda. Brau dawav's tim e was 4:48. 10 and Hensel 's was 4: 5 1.1 5. Last p lace finisher was Botlo Gruner, Arn ie 's da d, who refused to ride th e o ld timers class. He 's o nly 55 . J ohn More no lost his le ft shock in th e second lap , but finis hed th e race wit h t he wheel leanin g, tire tread worn off and rubbing the fender, an d the swin ging arm bro ken.
