The course consisted o f tw o 05 mile Ari z ona loops and one 134 mile Cali forn ia lo o p with a o n e-h al f ro ur down time while being escorted across the birdge. Most teams had the first rider do th e Arizona loop , th e ",cond rider covered the somewhat lo ugher California loop, a nd th e first rider finis hed u p by agai n running over the sam e Arizo na te rr ain. The 343.6 miles co nsisted o f everything fro m rough rocky hillclimbs, to flat fifth gear dese rt sand. It had rained the d ay before which made it even easi er for the bikes; five of which finished ahead o f the fir st buggy . It was Larry Ro eseler an d AC (Ace) Bakken (3 60 Hus) wh o finished firs t , a fu ll 27 minutes ahead of the first b u ggy . Bakken, wh o rode bo th the Arizona legs ran out o f gas abo ut th ree miles fr om the en d of the fir st loo p cau sing the en gine to seiz e. Shortly a fter th e en gine . freed (he cleverly switch ed to the reserve ta nk) it was Roesele r 's turn t o take on the California loop. They were in the lead almost all the wa y wh ich ain' t t oo shab hy when names lik e Malc o lm Smi th (no w into buggies), Cordis Bro oks an d Steve Holl aday are in competition . Roeseler was the winner o f the Baja Internacional 500 mile ra ce a nd A.C. Bakken finished second in the ' 75 Parker 400. Seven minutes b ehind the first place team was the AI Baker and Gene Cannady duo , ridin g a 4 50 Honda that had suffered the re sults of 12 m in utes downtime while ch angin g a clutch . T h ird o verall, and first in the 250 class, was S teve Ho lladay and Wayne Cook riding a C R 250 Ho nda wi th an el aps ed ti m e of seven hours and 32 m inu tes, a fu ll ei gh t m in u tes in fro n t of the firs t buggy. Only 15 min utes behind the firs t fou r-w heel ve hicle to finish - Bill Silverthorn - (yo u may re ca ll th is name fro m previous bike eve nts) was Eric Jensen, 26 , Pasadena and Car l Cranke , 2 7, Placerville, California o n a 125 Penton with a n ela ps ed ti me of 7:5 5.65. There - can be little doubt that fo rw ard m ounted shocks (im p ro ved suspension ), co n tinually imp r oving horsepower to weigh t ra ti os a n d o t h e r bulletproo f n u ts an d bolt devices ha ve produced quicker an d more reliable bikes in all o ff-roa d e vents. . The weak link in the ch ain now appears to be the DID rims th at acco u n ted for seven o f the first IO wheels to fin ish. The firs t place Hu sky had Ak ro nts, th e second place 250 class Harley had ' o ne Akront, one DID. Of the seven, six were bent considerabl y out of rou n d , two cau sed flat tires. Perhaps the DID is lighter , and won 't trap any mud, b ut who cares with a flat tire in the desert.
