INSIDE Voices Upshot Motocross Ride On Breakfast I would like to take this opportunity to thank your paper, and a special th anks to all the Desert Bikers (and other interested parties) for the support we received for ou r Spe cial Breakfast at the Outpost. We raised $7 5 for the Desert Legal Defense Fund. In spite of the co n t in uou sly rain y we ather over the weekend we supplied 140 sp ecial bre a kf a s t s, plu s some cash con t rib utions. I am also enclosing a short article from th e San Bernardino Sun, which sho ws t ha t the " powe rs that be" are co nsidering coer cion in t he ir efforts to co nt rol and eliminate public open uses of the public lands. I am not sure, bu t somehow I th ink it might be illegal for the County to use 520 ,000 of PUBLIC FU NDS for th e pa t ro l o f PRIVAT E PROPERTY until the individual property o wner makes so me effort to fence or close his property , or makes a valid co m plain t. There is obviously n o way a r ider can determine private lands in th e desert until they 're posted or fenced. As a taxpayer in th is co un ty , I firm ly object to the spending of my taxes in the polici ng of u nmarked private lands. Again, thank. to yo u and the bikers fo r your support. Thanks for th e excel lent , extremely detailed article o n Har ley's co n trib u t io n to the Great American Motorcycle . In the last two ye ars , under AM F's d irec t io n , Har ley -Davidson has doubled th e size of its engineering department, now under the direction of Dr. Jeff Bleustein, In th e next year it will dou ble again. You arc co rrect in assuming that Harle y's lo ng-range marketing p lans call for in cre ased sophistication in th e V·Twin co nc ep t . AMF is dumping a lot of ca p ital in to Harl ey-Davids o n to that the Gr eat American ensure Freedom Machine remains th e Gre at Ameri can Motorcy cle. Having co mp lim ented you , an d us, now allo w me to nitpick slightly; in th e February 3 issue of CNW, the last item in yo ur "Poop" colum n in dicate s that " AMF is lo oking to do a Na tio nal road race at Sears Po int." Editor we th ought yo u Happiness is a satisfied customer Several months ago I bo ugh t a '76 lIusqvarna from Action Cycl e, Huntington Bea ch . I received very go od tr eatment and was told th at if I h ad any problems to bring th e bi ke back. T wo months later I had a major problem, so I to ok it back, expecting to get a big bill for th e repairs . The owner , Ken ny Weems, honored his verba l agreemen t and took care of th e b ike at his own expense. A couple of weeks lat er the same tro uble developed and o n ce again I load ed it up and was ba ck to Ken ny's. He once again upheld his commitment and repaired the bike at no cost. The first class treatment was greatly appreciated an d it 's nice to know there's still so mething to a verbal agre ement. Kenny Weems has earned my respect .. . I would recommend Action Cycl e to anyone . JOH N CORVAULT Costa Mesa, Calif. Misery is an unhappy customer Back in August ' 75 I bought a set of Ccriani MX forks to replace the much -tweaked and non-working set holding up my 250 Yam. I was told that th e Alsp o rt warehouse in L.A. was out o f s tock on th ese and they were on the way from Norwalk, Ohio . Several weeks later th ey sen t a set of the small lightweigh t forks and upon calling Ohio they apologized for th e mistake and assured immediate co rr ec t io n . So we sent back the wrong ones and waited. After calling four times over the next few months we got a different excuse each ti me. The fifth time there was no answer and a cal l to th e M.I.C. to ld us they were o ut of business. How can I ge t my $160 bac k? Am I the o nly o ne to ge t screwed up by Alsp ort? PAT BURKE Cou ntry Club Dr. Carmel Valley, Calif. Short of jo ining a lo ng line of credit ors, Pat, it lo oks lik e yo u 've had o ne of th ose expensive experience s you'd rather fo rget . . . Edito r . . Thanks for prinung my article and for the spot in Papa's co lumn. Unfortunately there have been n o changes resu lt ing, although a great deal of symp athy is bei ng expressed o n our be ha lf. I haven 't given up, however, and am st ill trying to ove rco me o ur county red tape to get o ur u sc per mit. For fo ur months I have actively pursued this, with expectation of success within th re e or four mo n th s. Meanwhile, we have decided to force the co unty's hand and generate some income to sustain our efforts by holding even ts - whether legal or not. So you see, we: are no wh ere n ear success in San Mateo Country for off-road motorcycling. Our only success so far has been a ch an ge of policy at the board of supervisors, but we sti ll have no legal ar eas, nor permits being granted, no funds nor tax money nor county effo r t to establish future sites. Great, huh? DON IVAN Pescadero, Calif. It's sad th ey're going to have to resort to a f orm of borderline civil diso be dience to ge t some actio n on a legitimate need by th e county 's 35,000 ORV own ers. Sinc e there's no grease, gravy , or pork -barrel payoff in motorey cles, creating a crisis may be th e only way to get mo vem ent out of loca l politicos . . .
