Jo hn Tavis got the j ump in the sec ond r o und to be at o u t little Randy Mamola trying out the pro stuff for the first ti me . In the Novice Main Mamola put it all together with a fine start. The pint-sized speedster had no problem with the win and donated the procee ds to t he fund. In t he 15 laps, Randy pulled out nearly two seconds with Davis holding a t ight second over Tavis and Delacy who did some fancy passing fo r fou rth over Slack. J uni o r· Expe rt heats saw Pearson win the first with Kirk Tardiff having hi s rear wheel full of Steve Foster for t he distance. Ho cking had his han ds full o f Chuck Miller in the second heat with top rated 19 75 Novice Ted Davidson in th ird. Gary To nda survived the crash-ri dden th ird heat over Fenn Perv ier and Steve Die tz wh ile J ohn Gen nai an d Steve Eklund battl ed in the fourth with Ricky Grah am third . The 20'lap Main had nearly h alf the field in the back row by th e t ime it go t go ing fo r re al and Pears on too k the point fo r the fir st lap . Miller's Ossa lost a carb ure to r on the first tum and reti re d with Ek lund do ing his best to hol d back Gennai an d Tardiff. The second lap went to Hoc king as Pearson u nloaded down the back side giving Eklund second with Gennai righ t on him. That held fo r six more laps. then Gennai got off and Tardiff moved into third. The rest of the field was ge tting strung o u t and lots of bump and run wa s the ca ll. Foster and Scally were doing a lot of work on each other but Scally laid it down and let Gennai by while Rick Grah am held o n for a few more laps th an Pearson tha t ca used th e scorers a FOURTH PRIZE: SO SCOTT GOGGLES used by top d'lampions. The racing world was saddened this night by the loss of 0-36 starter Hoy Odom. Hoy suffered a fatal heart attack while sitting in the grandstands after having started the heat races. T he fat he r of Nat ional No. 18 Jim Odo m was talkin g with friends when he had his attack an d despite efforts of a pa ra medic and atten dan t , he succum bed. lI o y had re tired fro m act ive star t in g at least twice before , but always felt a need to do this job.
