I David Morris powe red his Bultaco to a co mfortable 200 NoviceJunior win - tod ay on th e slightly rough Sp rockets IT course. Morris led most o f the race but was interrupted once when Brad Helton (Yam ) slipped by coming ou t of tum three o n th e second lap. Morris snatched th e lead back in tum one of lap three but still had Helton right behind. Morris got a break in tum three when Helton bo bbled and Morris went on to win while Helton fought off third finisher Roland Gray (Bul) . Mike Yafchak (Yam ) took the Mini Expert honors after " D-35's top small bore, Mike Garrison (Yam) , left the track halfway through the race with a sour bike. Garrison, who has been the dominant figure in the Mini class , is fina lly getting some static from the Bakersfield Yamaha-backed Yafchak, Mike Davis (Yam ) held off a scrappy 250 cc Novi ce cro wd to take th e first pl ace tro phy whil e James Crisp (Suz) fo llowed for secon d. Ro bert Beverage squeezed by Wayne Kin g's KTM o n th e fina l st raigh t fo r th ird . T he 250cc Expert lead was to ssed aro und be tween Ste ve Monger (Yam) , Randy Gri ffi th (Yam), an d Bill J o hn son (Yam) the first two lap s, bu t on lap three Monger took charge fo r keeps a nd starte d ru nning away. Monger had a huge lead by the fmal lap and in the last tum, heading for what everyone t ho ught was a certain vic tory, down he went, ha nding the win to Randy Griffith who gladly accepted . Griffi t h had a ch ance for a double win today b ut going too high on laps two and five cost h im the Open Expert title which was won by Bill (Sparky) Ed mo ndso n (T ri). • Results in Results Secti o n . T he idea would be to ha ve all th e Novices in 125 cc, 250cc and Open ru n on Saturday with the top 25 in each divisio n returning to run ano th er co mplete program on Sunday along with the regular Juniors and Expe rts plus the specialties of minis, 100s, PPs, OTs and Vets. Sh awn McConn got the best part of the second moto of 125 Novice Division I and flew off with the overall win. McConn would pretty much repeat the performance on Sunday. . Steve McQueen (sorry , another one) swapped 125 Division II wins with Dale Pirlo but McQueen did the winning in the right spot for the overall. Also, he . led most of the laps in both motos givin g Pirlo only one and that at the end of the first moto, Little Mr. Magoo, Danny Chandler, had another 125 Expert class to himself, winning both ends on Sunday whil e Montgomery came out of Mike retirement to take second overall with a (2-4) co mbo over everpresent Glenn J ennings (3-6) . Do n Can ta lo up i, the 15 year old ex-minibike kid, smo ked h is way to a (2- 1) overal l in fro nt of Bruce Hanlon who m ight have had the whole bag of bucks had his seat not co me off. Ron Self too k third with a pair of threes , no t bad for n ot hav ing ridden in a month, while Hi-Po in ts Ron Hu ffman huffed to a (6-4) and fourth o ver all. J im Turner smoked the Open Experts on the ne w Lo fano & Sons RM 3 70; Turner will likely be riding one of those "in the upcoming Winter-AMA series. The little kid from El Salvador did it again in the 125 Junior for his las t ride in that class. Bet o Garcia-Rossi took both ends and despite a crash in the 250 even t took home another trophy. Brad Dietrich took a pair of deuces and will inherit th e en tire class now, while Larry Lacey came in with the third by a point. A spe cial part of the Sunday show was the SoCal sidehackers, The Palfreyman /Gardner team came out on the top while one te am came out on top of their heads do ing a horrendo us high flying endo and bending lo ts of metal. Without a doubt they were.the highlight of the Sunday sho w and the " crowd lo ved every seco n d running from one side of the track to th e other and applaud ing at the end of the two motos. • It is hoped that they will be able to • co me back. mil e lap s, run o n loggin g ro ad s th ro ugh the In yo Nat io nal Forest. " Covered wi th a deep blanket of snow in the winter, Mammoth is primarily known as a ski resort, but with the melting of the snows it shows its true beauty. Lakes, rivers, ' streams , and alpine me ad ows abo un d , an atmosphere where o ne wants to sit with a fishing pole in his hands listening to the wind caressing th e pines.
