Full er's humiIation of the Kawasaki 9 00s o f Harold Stewart and Leland Nakagawa, the 750 Honda of Jeff Steele, the 750 Tri ump h of David Breetwor was heralde d as "the ride of the day. " Full er 's win was officially credited as being in the packed 500 Product ion .class. But it ac tually was an eas y annihilation of the one -ha lf-lap co m bined 500 , 750, and Open cl asses. Fuller is sponsored by Kerb 's Outpost , a clothing store co mpany . "I had a sn ea kin g suspicion that so m ebody who was go ing really fast was gain ing o n m e," said Fuller wh en he pulled into t he pits af ter the race. In real it y, no one was in sight. St eel e w as a far-behind second , barely holdi ng off Breetwor's brillian t last lap charge. Bree twor m ad e up 20 len gths to mis s seco nd place by on e wheel 's diamete r at the flag, Fuller won $25 for that race. Earlier , he had won ano ther $ 25 of CMC prize money w ith an eq ually -easy 350 class victory. CMC Producti o n Champion J ohn Glover (Yam) was secon d in that race. In th e o peni ng laps of th e Su pe r Cafe race, Fuller an d his little Yamaha were righ t in with the leaders - Pee Wee Gleason o n an American Turbo-Pa k tu rbo-charged Ho nda 750 (his first time o n the course ), Keith Code o n an im maculat e Action Fou rs equipped 570 Honda, Pat Beacom o n an RC Engin eering Kawasaki 900. Gleason an d Beaco m led the first lap s, bu t the n Code flew p ast in the tricky uphill-downhill ho rse shoe sect io n of the diffic ult Willow Springs road co urse. Fu ller was in fourth as Gleaso n Neilson, riding his faded back. newly-buil t 883 cc AMA-le gal Duck, was ba ck in seven th . Neilso n knocked it up all the way in to seco n d in a fe w lap s, b u t had his problems en route. "I had a lot of tro ub le getting aro und Fuller, " Neilso n said. "Finally I just let my motor (9 93cc) kill his motor (35 0cc). " Neilso n foll o wed Code 's 57 0 Honda for a couple of circuits, t hen swooped by and ran off to win . Fuller was fo urt h in the Super Cafe race. It is worth notin g that the Yoshima Racing 400cc Honda ridden by John Higham pass ed Fuller for third, behind Neilson an d Code. David Ernde rode the same 250 Yamaha to win 250, 350, and 500 GP races. Whitney Bl akesle e be at Wes Cooley , Jr.'s TZ700 with an air-cooled Kawasaki in Open GP. Don Die rking used a water-cooled, monoshocked Yamaha to win 125 GP without the benefit of a fairing.
