Brooks and Sanderson skate to a win at Sled Riders team race By Linda Hecker RED MOUNTAIN, CAL, FEB. 8 Desert riders gathered Sunday for the Sled Riders annual Team Race, and althou gh rain was expe cted, most of them forgot to brin g their rain coats. Wearing plastic garbage bags seemed to be the answer if you wanted to stay dry. The Am atuer /Experts and Novices started together but he aded for different bo mbs. The rain stopped just in time for a beautiful dust-fr ee start . It took Robby Parma a few kic ks to get his Mon o st arted and by that time abo u t 50 ot h er riders were off. It di dn 't take hi m long to catch up and wh en Rob by fin ally got to the bo mb, he wa s runnmg in first p lace. Un fo r tu na tely , he seized sho rtl y after th at givin g u p the lead to Bruce Ogilvie . Bruce later dropped out and Tom Brooks took over the lead position with Bob Rutten running second. Tom Brooks' teammate Rusty Sanderson held their lead to th e end to place first overall. Jeff Raplau and Max Eddy , on their 175s, pl aced second overall. The first Open class riders were Bob Rutten and B.T. D own, followed by Mark Storms an d Bill Brecker on 3 70 Suzukis. First Am ateurs were Paul Christenson and te ammate Brian Wrigh t, riding in the Open class, taking sixth overall. It wasn 't long before the Godfrey Roberts/Rock Roberts team ca me in to t ake first Novice and a very respectable 15th overall. Ted Overhoet and Bill Sheets were second, followed by H.C. Smith and George Coyler. Chuc k Ale xander and Jerry. Herrin were first overall in the Sen ior di vision. Dave Mauskar and J ohn Kap lin pl aced sec o nd .
