Frola fights for first By Larry Owe n PHOENIX, ARIZ., JAN. 25 Even though some of the top Experts from Phoenix weren't on hand Sunday. the other pros performed exceptionally well. Approximately 200 racers showed up for some great motocross. Open Expert Andy Frola (Bul) took the lead and made it stick, although it was touch and go with Vic Darelik on his brand new '76 mono and Roger Jones on his not so new CZ. The second mota brought Jones (CZ) down the long straight leading with Frola (Bul) second and Darelik (Yam) third. Hal fway through the Ifl-lapper Jones had some problems and Frola took over first. Tom Hooker (Yam) edged Darelik out for third and that's the way it ended for the overall. Ten-year old Min i Expert Troy Blak e (Han ) opened some mouths when he passed co nsisten t Scott Reddell (Yam) in the first mota and won. Both riders challenged each other in the second mota but Troy at e it on the back drop uff ;:=:~~: !!!m out of contention and Scott took first overall. ; Aguirre wins Expert main By Elaine Jones CORONA. CAL.,JAN. 28 Denny Aguirre (Kaw) captured the Expert half-mile but it was definitely a last minute reprieve. He chased Doug Hannon for eight of the ten lap race before getting by him and then had to hold off a strong charge. Jeff Johnson hit for two, winning both the TT and the half-mile 125 Novice. On the TT it was wire to wire but on the half-mile Terry Singleton held him off for two. After that it was clear sailing for Jeff. On the TT the Open Novices had to Expert Craig Armstrong won the class he was followed by two Novices, Dick Lewis and Ken Griner. Rob Selvy moved up to his 250 and let Rick Pew lead for one lap before he too k over and showed the boys the way home. Rick had much better luck on the TT where he topped Ron H1anka and Ken Henderson for the win . Mike Tidwell is still riding five and winning five . but a co uple of riders may give him quite a run for the money before the year is out. In the 125 Amateur/Expert class Don Tortorelli was closer than most and, if he can squeeze some more juice out of his Harley, he could become a problem. Freddy Conover is another one who is still sorting out the bugs. Bob Eary chased Tidwell in the 250 Expert Single TT and half-mile, but in the Twin class , Eddy San Roman wa s breathing hard and looking very hungry as he put the pressure on Mike. • Results in Results Section. High schools R.A.C.E. for points By Ron Cogan CORONA, CAL., JAN. 23 Southern California High School MX fans had their night recently at Corona Raceway. where an estimated 90 riders and over 100 spectators gathered for weekly R.A.C.E. inter-school co mpe titio n . Five schools were scheduled to compete in 27 motos Rubidoux, Chino, Palm Springs, Chaffee, and Montclair - although participation was narrowed somewhat . by the Chaffee te am who apparently forgot where the tr ack was. Relatively short races produced hot competition and handlebar banging from the start line to the first tum, and those who led after this point generally won their race. It was really a tight course. The major battle for points was waged by Rubidoux and Chino with respective scores of 480 and 422. Palm Springs earned 305 points, while Montclair's ten-rider entry netted 137 points. One incident that caught everyone's eye in the second round was a spectacular, yet relatively minor, collision that broke one competitor's bike in half. Who says you can't ride a double entry in the same race? • Results in Results Section. Whoa big fella ! Randy Blevins tames Sadd leback on his CZ
