Taylor continued to close on Denton for the lead but, in the same co mer in whic h Gary had crashed in the first ro un d , Dave dropped his Hon da and eight ' po sition s in the race. Denton easily scored the victory over Clark, Clifton and Steve Schilling (Hon ). Again, Denton to o k the holeshot with Taylor second and Clark in third. Taylor pulled away fro m Clark and bega n to challenge Den ton for the lead. On the third lap , as the two riders came over the "Wheelsmith J ump " together, Taylor, in his attempt to move by Den ton fo r the lead , went off the side of the j ump and off the course. T ay lor jumped back on the course, but was disqualified for n o t entering th e track at the same spot he had left.
