~ AMC $600 MX By Rex Reese SUN NYMEAD , CAL,JAN. 18 J ohn DerHammer (Mai) hammered his competition to pieces in the Op en Ex perts to day at De An za where the AMC held its latest Pro pu rse moneycross. The race bro ught ou t man y of th e hotshoes, including th e Suzuki factory whic h field ed a team of developmen t riders mo u nted on so me super prot o RM 125s. The local rumor was t hat Suz uki was just ou t to te st their n ew RM 125 , but the fac tory go t its money 's worth o f eyeballing wh en th e m y steri ou s men in wh ite coats saw Der Hammer an d his mi ghty Wheelsmith Maico clo bber th e rest of th e Op en Experts. In th e fir st rnoto DerHammer sho we d the rest th at he was in a class by him self. On th e nin th lap J ohn ha d alrea dy la pped a co u ple o f st ragglers and then pro ceed ed t o ru n over everybo dy else . By t he 16 th lap , everybody had be en lap ped at least once , ex cep t fo r Bob Elliot (S uz) and Randy Berkeley (Mai) who h ung on behind " The Hammer " in their respective positions t o fin ish tw o , three. Ocr Hammer rep eated his firs t mo t o by lap pin g al most perfo rman ce everyone in sight fo r a perfect I-I in the Open Experts. The 250 Experts were total1y b erserk as Mark Tyer (Yam) led the char ge , followed by Mike Bell (Hus) and Jeff Jennings (Suz) . Mark and Mike diced it out until the second lap when Mike almost screwed hi mself into the gro u nd as he highballed it down the downhill sweeper. Mike recovered but faded ba ck to sixth which immediately put J enn ings righ t on Tyer 's tail. The pressure on Mark was too much, and by the fourth lap. Jeff had put his Suzuki in co m m and and p roceeded to pu t lots of space be tween hi msel f and t he pack. Dave Williams (Ya m) ca me fro m o u t of nowhere with the most radical riding see n, holding on to finish se co nd, while Marty Moat es (Suz) lo c ked into thi rd. Je ff J en ni ngs loo ked as if he would' take th e second 25 0 Exper t m o t o , b u t th e crasher blue s th at go t him in th e 125s pro ved to be only the be ginning of hi s problem. On th e l Ith lap, J eff was leading Dave Williams as bo th were setting up fo r a smal1 j um p th at led into an u p hill turn . But Jeff sud denly slo wed up to pass a slower rider when Williams, who had already crested th e jump, do ve into J ennings' rear wheel. A brutal crash resulted th at almost fu sed their bi kes together. J eff writhed on th e gro und in ago ny as Dave frantically tried to peel his Yamaha o ff of J eff's Suzu ki. Everyb ody anticipate d th e wo rst , b ut J eff apparen tiy o nly had t he wind kn oc ked out of him . He was O.K. , bu t th e Su zu ki was messed up , which no doubt ins pired J eff to cal1 it a day . The crash left the lead wide open for Dan ny La Porte (Suz) t o win the m o to , but Mart y Moates (Suz) tr ucked in fo r second, which combined with his th ird place finish in the first moto to give him th e overal l win . Dave Willia ms m an aged to salvage his ride with a 2-3 score fo r second overall, while Mark Tyer (Yam) and his 5·4 placing was zood for third. j ohn Tessit ore rode hard , fast , smoo th , and in the lead at Carlsbad.
