Spencer SONOMA, CAL., DEC. 28 Ro und Tw o of Winter Series Motocross at Sears Point Raceway provided some Nationally ranked talent and a dynamite turnout of " young No vices. The big winner was once again the AMA with over $400 in new signups. With such greats as Brad Lackey and J im Turner putting on their own show, the interest sh ould carry over for the rest of the series which goes to a two day format in J anuary. In the Open Expert, T urner smoked th e o ther 27 riders off the line in the opening mota as Bad Brad gave an advantage to the tro ops w ith a bad start. By the third lap he was moving through to second being closely chased by Dave Longcor (Bu l). Longcor kept clo se for two laps until exi ting the last com er he gassed it too hard and low-sid ed. He remounted without losing a spot while Brad just couldn't catch T urn er . In the second m o to it was a trophy dash be tween the Lackey Husky and the Turner Suzu ki. J im got by Bradley on the third lap in fine style, The two st ayed attached for the next two laps with Brad trying to ge t around. T wice he appeared to have a sh ot but each time, th e Suzuki was j u st in the proper wa y to hold him back. Then on the back side of the longish tw o mile course Brad did the Carnegie trick by hitting a p ost breaking th e gear shift. .With but second gear to rnotate on, he lost enoughground that Turner lapped him. Longcor played catch up again by taking a second overall. Danny Leet be ing Mr. Consistent cam e in with two thirds and the third overall while Scott Austin was quite impressive with th e fourth, overall in points on board an ' elderly Maico . Be to Rossi , an exhange student from El Salvador, joined the J unior ranks today and won both the 250 and 125 Junior even ts. Leaving turn one after the start it 20 was Amaral at the point followed by Car l Wilkerson (Suz) , Brad He lton (Yam) , and Brock Glover (Yam). S tarting lap tw o Amaral began stretc hing his lead ' while Helton got second by taking a short cut around the -ju rnp and p assing Wilkerson in the process. John Birges (Yam) pu t the bite on Glover for fourth and started eyeing Wilkerson for third. Bo th Birge s and Glo ver got b y Wilkerson at the start of lap four so it wa s Am aral wi th an enormous lead , Helton secon d, then Birges and Glover arguing over third. ' Glover got his way in tum one o f the ' last lap, and was moved up to second when Hel ton was penalized one positi on for missing the jump o n lap one. Fireworks . at Pioneer By Ann Carr OAKDALE, CA L., J AN 4 Pioneer Arena opened its fifth seaso n today as 188 scramblers gassed it u p over a cobby, slick course. Jumping to the front in this year's plate race was Benny King of Salinas _ with a w in in the 250 Expert Main. The Jorgensen boys seemed to be headed fo r a 1-2 after the heats as each won handily, but King j umped to the front of the main until lap eight when Alex made a slick pass and had the race sewed up. A tire in the jump righthander, however, caught Alex by surprise and he fell . King then re to o k firs t with younge r Jorgy Kim in second. Ted Davidson co ntin ue d to dominate tht: 125 and O pen Expert classes but not without a struggle. The 125 challenger was Seaside's Jeff Haney , rising 14-year o ld who held off Ted for six laps , but seemed to tire midway. Mitch Davidson, who just missed the plate list they year, slipped by Haney for second. 1 Davidson's Open Ex pert victory was als o a to ugh one as he chased Steve Parker's Maic o for six laps.
