This eliminated the T Z-750 Yamaha road race engi ne Expert must have two good motorcycles , a short tracker and a 750cc. The 750 will work for IT. h alf miles, and miles even though the very specialized IT and mile equip men t will . be difficult to compete with. With the advent of the m ulti and its 100+ horsepower, Experts wi ll be force d to p urchase a third m o t o rcy cle sp ecifically for mile racing. T hat multi-cylinder mile bike is likely to be very expe nsive. The end result wo uld be that a large number o f A M A Experts wo uld stop riding the mile! and Erv Kanemoto Kawasaki tripl es from the mile. A m o dest reaction was noticed from the p ublic and a great furor emanated from th e motorcycle press - "Why is the stupid AMA trying to stop progress, are they afraid of HARLEY-DAVIDSON?" As a member of the Board of Trustees of th e AMA J supported the multi-cylinder ban and voted for it, and I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on the subject with you. Professional class "e n racing is still the AMA's singl e most continuously su ccessful form of competition from the standpoint of the spec ta t or . th e promoter an d th e ra cer. Nearly all th e Camel Pro Series eve nts have a good spectator turnout and a lar ge en ough rider sign-up so that a really compe titive field can be qualified. A co mp et itive field is. of course , th e secret to the success of class " en racing, and is the single most . important element of concern when considering any ru le chan ges. The deve lopm ent of the mul ti-cylinder engine, whether two o r four stroke, in class "C" raci ng would adversely af fect our ability to put together competitive fields of riders for any dirt event be cause of, CO Sl . avail ability of competitive equip ment and safety . Let's co nsider these o ne at a time: Cost : T he vast majority of A M A dirt track Experts ar e self-sponsored. Th ey may receive a small amount of e x pense m oney, fre e parts or leathers. bu t they ' pa y most of their ra cin g bills out of .. th eir own p ocket. Ri ght now a clas s ·'C" We are all aware of the large num be r of m ult i-cy lin der roadracers around. but most of us ar e also cognizant of the fact that only a small handful of those machin es are even re motely competitive. The comp lexity of the m ult is and the necessity for more sophist icated chassis, brakes, wheels and tires, coupled with the high cost of development of these items co mbine to limit the number of truly co m p eti tive bikes to only a few. and these are in the hands of sponsored riders. The factories seem to be somewhat reluctant to share all their tuning secrets for multis with th e privateers (at least on a timely basis ). and although this is a normal thing to do in a com pe ti tive sport. it leaves some very e x pe n sive a nd technologically complex tasks in the hands of ra cers who can least afford the time or th e money. Some rather dull roadracing has res ulted from this dirth of co m p eti tive motorcycles and I see no co mpelling reason to su spe ct that such would not be the case with dirt track should the mult is be allowed. Safety : T he Board was advised by o ur Direc t o r of Competition that the existing ava ilable dirt tracks are not safe for the high ho rsepower. multi- cylinder motorcycles. He f urt he r stated th at he was becoming increasingly concerned with th e suitability of th e tracks for the h ighly developed 75 Occ tw ins running today. He advised us that he will monitor the si tuation closely and stand ready to make recommendations for the safety of A~IA riders.
