Mrs . Greener, a race worker and supporter since her boys were first-graders, would have enjoyed today's show in her memory. Pioneer's t ac k y surface encouraged so me smokin' competition and some wild getoffs, Riders act ed as if the D-36 point season was not over. John Pittman followed h is smooth 250 heat ride with wh at looked to be a win over Jorgy Jorgensen in the Main, but Johnny bailed over the bars after six and relinquished the' spot. J orgy went on to a runaway firs t wh ile little brother Kim had a sure second snatched awa y on the white flag lap by the charging Alan McGehee. Other Expert Mains turned into runaways or cras h affairs as Ted Davidson too k the 125 and Open wh ile J im Cunningham , Phil Bakarich, and Mike Bird picked off the 100, 80 , and 60 events respectively . Novice and Junior ac t io n this cool Sunday featured some close racing in the 125 and 250 classes. In the 250 ranks y oung J im Fee appeared to be a shoo-in aft er he blitzed his heat, but a four-bike pileup in the Main was too nerve-racking and Fee coasted into the pits after one lap. Modesto's Parry Salsi sco o t ed his Ya maha to vic to ry over the Ho nda troops as a result. Bultaco 250 Junior Randy Grenig of Modesto followed his devastating La Grange win with ano th er as he sneaked up on Escalon's Norm San chez and San Jose's Stan Slate to za p both o n the last lap . New 12 5 Junior R oger Harrill o f Turlock survived a restart followin g lap three for his first Intermediate win . Seas id e 's J eff Haney co n ti n ued his point-getting and pressured Harrill most o f the way but could no t ge t aro und. • Mann and Douglas sweep Sand Hill By Marvin Patton BRENTWOOD. CAL, DEG. 2 1 Bob Myers, John Franklin and many o th er top 250 Expert riders all had th e spirit o f Ch ristmas and giving - giving Dick Mann a run for his money . The yo unger riders t hink th at he h as raced fo r so lon g and is get ti ng o ld er and th er efore has to sta rt going downhill, but Dick is not on ly getting o lder but better also . The first moto st arted with Neil Davis (Suz ) ge tting the holesho t, Mann (ll SA) was not far be h ind and w as soon in th e lead for the rest of the moto. Davis , llob Myers (Mai), and John Fra n kli n (KT M) were havin g a battle for sec o nd place . Ive rs go t by Davis and had an easy seco nd. Franklin also go t by Davis for th ird . The second moto wa s a d if feren t st ory for Dick . lIe was six t h off the line behi n d Davis' second hol eshot. Mvers --_. Min i Nov ice w inner Steve Machago eve nt showed up his Dad at Sand Hill. was next with Glen Jennings (Yam ) third. The second lap Jennings passed Myers and was putting pressure on Davis . Myers saw a move , o p en ed his throttle full and shot by Jennings an d Davis. Dick Mann h ad moved to fifth in the third lap behind Gary Murphy (Hus). Myers. the 15 year old 250 ace of Sand Hill. st arted to pull aw ay and leave the rest of the race to everyone else . J ennings and Davis started to drop back and by the fourt h lap Dic k Mann was behind Murphy in third. Then th e heat came. Mann moved into second an d was soon on Myers. Bob was de termined to hold Dick off. On the last lap, Myers went wide in a sweeper tum and Mann stayed ins ide. Mann made his mo ve to take the inside o n the next comer and Bob had to back off. Little nine year old Steve Machago (Ya m) , wo n a big three foot firs t pl ace trop hy when he co n q uered the Mini No vice s. Of co urse, he had to show up his father who ju st finished third in the Vet s class and got a trophy abo u t half the size . • ~ ::; with some of th e fastest times turned so fa r th is rough scrambles season. Brad Sanders (Ho n) t urned in an other impressive win , running aw ay with t he 25 0 Novice race . J erry McBrayer (Mai) gave Brad the only co m pe tition he 's had so far this seas on, pushing hard for the first few laps. Brad was able to hold off Jerry 's efforts an d fmally opened up a sizeable lead. Lo nnie Manning (CZ) gave the sp ectators , (and riders) a real treat in the Junior/Expert Open Main, with his flat out, on the riding style . Dana Penebaker (Kaw got a tremendous holeshot and beat the pack through tum one to open up a fair lead while the rest of the pack bunched up in the tum. Manning and Jim Hubbard (Yam) came off the line in fourth and fifth pla ce . Coming in to the first sweeper WFO. Lonnie kept right on the gas, doing a co u ple of fancy numbers and eating it righ t in fron t o f Hubbard. J im saw the whole thing com ing but when he let off, the front wheel slid out and he went down too. Manning got up, d ust ed himself off. got back on his CZ and showed everybody what a real ride is. In the next three laps. he not only caugh t up with the rest, but p assed every bike on the tra c k except Penebaker, Two more laps an d he had caugh t up to Dana too. Th is just wasn 't Lonnie 's day . though. As he was making his bid for the win. something gave out on his scooter. Still, if an award were given for effort, Redding's Lonnie Manning would have won it for sure.
