Bu t a lo t of things that pit blo ck ers ask are selfex planat ory. They have never seen a tire with grooves in it, no one else on the track has a tire with grooves in it , and th ey just saw you cut th e grooves in the tires. Follo wing all of this they will ask me, 'Did you pu t those gro oves in th e tire yourself?" "Th e AMA is suppose to fe nce th e pits and use guards. This hasn '; been working ou t too welL Usually the pro moter d oesn't wan t to put ou t the m on ey and th e AMA doesn't want to tell th e prom o ter that he has to make th e pits secure. It is down to th e point now that du ring practice and before each race y ou have to load all the equ ipm en t up an d put it back ins ide the van, lo ck it, go to th e Tace, and th en come back and unload. With th e tim e we are given to be able t o wo rk o n th e bikes it is almost impossible. We only have about 45 m inutes be tw een p ractice and th e race to do what we have to do to th e bik e. We do n't have tim e t o un lo ad all the tires, toolboxes, and equipment. .. "Du ring th e Trans-A. One time in New Orleans a rider had a bike break and a spectat or ran off with the gastank under th e gu ise of helping us ge t th e bike back to the pits. Not every body carries three or fo ur gastank s. We ma y hav e needed that lank. .. For Tony it is just as tough to be a star and t he victim o f souvenir hun te rs. Tony says , " It's rough after y ou 've done well in a race because all th e people come over. You have 10 ho ld on to your gear if you wan l to kee p it. I lo st a pair of gloves at th e Mich igan Trans-AMA. My wheel broke and I set my glov es down. Th ere were o ther riders arou nd and a kid took th e glo ves right out from under us. Th e spectators gen erally are very good: Th ey are under th e misconception that we can get anything we need. But stuf f lik e gloves are personal items.
