Fi fty riders cQrri"!:tca for the • • C"." r gIgan.t!c ;jiiver Cup, a trophy valued at $500. The previous winner, Jamie Avels, riding a borrowed 400 Mono, led the race for most of the first loop. Then Morgan Malocco (400 Yam) charged up alongside and pulled a slight advantage. Balentine (400 KTM) was right behind them both and surged into the lead in a section of rollers near the end of the first 12-mile lo op. From there the course went four times arou nd a second eigh t-mile loop. It was windy on Saturday, with 60 mph gusts hitting some of the hills. On one h ill it was really bad..The leaders ma de it th rough OK, alth ough they were moved from one side of the trail to the other. But some other riders weren't so lucky. They were either forced off into the rocks or just completely knocked over. Some gave up at that point. Balen tine never really had a serious challenge from that poin t on. Malocco held second for most of the race, only to drop his chain about halfway through the last loop. Avels took second at the finish, despite an inoperative clutch and broken motor mount bolts. Tom Kelly took three kicks to get started , then moved' his little 125 Yamaha t hro ugh t he pack. Up to fourth by the end of the first loop, he finished third overall. Another sma ll-bi ke rider had a brillian t performance. Allen Meek (175 KTM) was fast all the way through for fourth overall. The winds settled down on Saturday afternoon. As predicted, Winona Richardson went through with her belly dance , despite the freezing temperatures. Sunday morning dawned and the 0-200 Beginners started the day. Blaine Midkiff (125 Suz) took that o ne, followed by Kirk Margheim (125 Yam). As a note of interest, Ll-year-old Kelly Kline wasn't entered in the Powder Puff class, but rather in the Min i 's. She won the Mini class all right, but she also beat all the Beginner Powder Pu.ff~. J t.i ene Payne (Yam) wa:; iill; ;'ctual class winner, :-:"ark Hagan (400 Yam) led the 250/0pen Beginners to the bo mb. But the big lead he'd Had there was soon eaten up by Tom Maddocks who went on to win easily. Devin Cobbs (Hus) was second and first 250 after an exciting ride through the pack. Hagan finished third. The Novices were split up with the 0-200s, Seniors and Powder Puffs going first. Rick Muller (125 Yam) led all the . way, finishing with a commanding lead ove r Kenny Upp (125 Yam) and Steve Gren ke (125 Yam) . Jerry Welton (125 Hon) deserves a men t io n for co ming up from way back in t he pack to finish fourth. Don Lo ckridge (250 Yam) knows y ou can teach an old do g new tricks; he 's been getting faster every race, this time he beat all the Senior Novices quite easily. Leslie Klug (25 0 Yam) finished first Po wder Puff. Chuck Fowler led the 250/Open Novices to the bomb and around the first loop . He did remove a bit of the banner at the finish chute though, and Ran dy Martin (400 Yam) took the lead. Martin led most of the race but his chain snapped on the last Ioop, After Martin's demise, a pie -plate rider too k the checkered flag and then duc ked through the fmish be fore an yo ne could see him. The D RA checked his entry an d the name given was for a guy wh o had never done well be fore, so they dis qualified him fo r not coming through t he chute. Ron Burpo said he knew that the rider was not the one entered but rather had a friend sign up for him. Shawn Underwood (400 Yam) thus got the Overall win, with Dale Anders 1360 Bul) second.
