(Continued from page 21) in 250 Expert round two . J eff Mathews fell into second, David Morris was third. Mathews took th e lead on the fir st lap and motored away with t he Number One plat e. Foster d iced for a while with Morris but los t the urge and dropped back. Randy Burns m ate rial ized sh ortly to continue the battle, coming out on top, following Mathews t o the flag for second. Mathews to ok a clean first overall, Burns was runne r u p . Kenny Fr ost and Chip Howell carried their season-long De Coster/Mikkola· type duel into the last mota. Kenny pulled another holeshot with a few assorted CZS, Andrews and Howell hot on his tail. Kenny gassed it to a commanding lead that he maintained until the halfway point. Howell had been gaining ground at an alarming rate and was now within striking distance. Kenny pulled his throttle WFO, employing dusty berms, lapped riders, skill and any other means available in an effort to shake the menacing Husky. It came right down to the wire and Kenny took the win by a wheel length. Ed Andrews put two consistent rides together for third. • Results in Results Section. Ho nd a-mounted Da le Dugger to ok third beh ind the two Ya mah a riders. In the second mota, Scott was bound and determined t o take the win and he did an excellent job of it. Fraley blasted off the jump and took off after the Novices like a white tornado! Each lap, Scott passed a few riders but the n came the hard part, getting past fran t ru n ner Ab le. Scott maneuvered his way very carefully around Jeff and snatched away th e first sp o t. Mota three was ready t o ro ll and Scott and Jeff were very much aware that this was the race that would determine who took home the tall green trophy. All bikes were ready and waiting so the flag flew ' and it was Able out in front. Scott had al ready passed every one but J eff by the second lap and was really giving Jeff a run for his money . J eff wasn't about to let Scott by him this time, and Fraley had to settle for seco n d. All the I25s rode together in a combined race. Two heats were run to a semi, then a final eigh t-man main concluded the race. Steve Griffith and J im Wrigh t were the two riders lucky enough to transfer straight to the main from the first heat. Steve was one of two Amateurs and Jimmy a Novice. Chris Choisser and Carl Whitt, the other Amateur, transferred from the second he at. The sem i would decide the fin al four riders to ride in the main event. Beginner Donnie Bean was first, followed by Novices Mike Neeley and Gary Russell . Rocket Rex Staten , the crowd please r, was kept bottled up all night back in the pack an d was on ly at his most dazzling during practice. Staten threw a chain and later amazingly blew his engine on the starting line. The boys from team green were on hand with Gary Semics and Steve Wise leadi n g the first mota until Semics stopped to see the Aamco man on the 400 and Wise suffered ill luck on the two and one-half, Three ti me National Champion Gary Jones practiced during the week on a 125 Jones-Isla but went over the twenty-five man starting gate on the 250 proto. It ran well, but not for long. Peter Lamppu had a top ten fin ish (n o pun) in the bag until two laps from the end when his gas tank cracked releasing most of its liquid contents onto the spark plug. Peter says it might be his last race unless he finds a new sponsor. The triumphant T rans-AMA Can-Am team was there, minus Captain Cobalt. Mike Runyard unfortunately got to see AI Baker's sm o keb o m b special loop-out up close. Too close for safety. Mike came back to finish well in the last two rounds. Washington's lone entry was more co nsist en t, but the fabled Can-Am power was left somewhere on the Trans·AMA circuit.
