This race was also the last D-3S points race of 1975. Since Number One had already been decided in b oth the 125 and Open classes, most of the tension evolved fro m th e 250 ran ks. Mike McGowen (National Amateur Champ), Jeff Mathews, and Randy Bums had been battling all season long. These three riders claimed most of the 250 Expert wins throughout the season, with occasional spoilers from three-time 0-38 Nu mber One Mike Steams, who has since forsaken 0 -38 in his pursuit of the national circuit. Jimmy Martin and Dean Stafford also deserve mention ; both suffered hit-and-mi ss seasons, with flashes of brilliance marred by th e nickel-and-dime b lue s. The 125 Experts blasted off the line with Dennis Curtis (Ho n) pulling a tremendous hol eshot, Curtis stayed on the throttl e and proceeded to run away from the pa ck . Dennis h as been doing his Marty Smith routine enough th is season to claim the Number One plate. Meanwhile, Joe Santich (Ho n), Curtis ' closest co mpetitio n this season was moving up from a slow start. Santich caught second-place Bob Murry (Hon) and di ced briefly before forging on after Curtis. Curtis, however, was long gone. The tension was mounting as the co m bined 250 Amateur/Expert class watched the rubber band for a tell-tale flicker. Finally the band went and it was a mad dash to the left-hand first tum. Gary Cox (Yam) edged into the lead pursued by Mathews (C-A) , Bum s (Bul), an d McGowen (Suz) . McGowen was suddenly out of the race when h is RM seized. Jeff Mathews didn't waste much time in his bid for Number One. By the second lap he was past Cox and proceeding to pull away. Bums lost third p lace and few more when he dropped h is Bul on a rough uphill. Meanwhile, a battle developed for the possession of second place between Gary Cox and David Morris (Kaw) . Morris finally won the argument and the second spot. Cox hadn't seen the last of the pressure though. McGowen had ridden like a tornado from dead las t to challenge for third. McGowen passed Cox in the closing laps and set his sights o n second. Mike never got that far however. He had unknown problems on the last lap. Mathews took the win , followed by Morris in second. Cox came across the line for third , McGowen preserved to fourth, Randy Burns rounded out the top five . Kenny Frost be at th e Open Experts to th e first tum, pursued by Ed Andrews (Yam) and Gary Harris (Hus).
