Bob Ru tten (Hod) , Jeff Kaplan (Hus) and Frankie Keepers (KTM) battled for second. Rutten finally got it, Kapl an took a third, Max Eddy (KTM) a fourth . Un officially, it lo oks like Kaplan will carry No. l c fo r next year. With Kelly way o ut in front , it was James Brown (Yam) as next Amateur. Steve Zoller (Ho n ) took the Division 11 Novice race, lead in g nearly all the way . Do ug Otten (Hon) passed Zoller, but had his engine seize up a little la ter. A. Harrison and Mike Co nn ely to ok seco nd and thi rd. Larry Roeseler too k the lead as the 25 0 Am ateu rs and Experts hit the bo mb. Cordis Brooks (Bul) to ok the lead away from Larry and held until a few yards fr om the finish. Roeseler blitzed by at the last second to nab first, Andy Kirker (Hus) finis hed third, about six inches ahead of Brent Wallingsford (Yam) . Mike Patc hen (Yam) finished ahead of us ual winner Mark Zoll er to take first Amateur. R. Sadd (Yam) was third. Vance Schmid (Yam) took yet another 250 Nov ice victory , this time ahead of K. Bilbrey (Yam) and E. Zemojtez (Bul) . Veteran Art Knapp (Hus) dominated the He avyw eigh t action, fin ish in g with a commanding lead over Kei th Hart and Ed Zarp. At fourth overall, C. Harris took first Amateur. Dawn Grant (17 5 Hus ) took the earl y lead in the Women's Division race, bu t a spectacular endo sent her flying into the soft sand. Grant unhur t, later comme nted that it was " kinda fun." Meanwhile, Trudy Beck (KTM) , sti ll recovering fr om a n o t-so-fu n get o ff, took th e lead. Grant charged by the pack after her crash to take second. Beck's inju ries hurt her co nc en tr at io n, allowing Grant to slip by for the lead and the win. Lynette Zuber took third, Ge orge Walker (250 CA) di d his usual and won the Sen io r Divisio n. Right behind him in the 25'0 standings were G. Pagen (Yam) and Bob McLaughlin. In the Open class wars , No . 0128 won ahead o fW. Novak (Suz ) and Dick Camp (Yam) . D. Hawkins won the Divisio n 11 Senior cl ash , with H. Cantrau (Yam) in sec o nd. D. Dorman (KTM) triumphed against the Trail Seniors, D. Kelsey (Suz) took second and Marl yn Kinney finished third. It didn't loo k that deep . . . • On the brakes, downshifting for a corner, Andy Kirker had compiled a mass ive lead by the end of the f irst loop of EI Cajon M.C:s Coyote Chase. Another part of the visiting 0-37 contingent was John McCown and KJ . John's an Expert now, but we don' t know how KJ has been classified•. He took th e lead in the 16th Annual Coyote Chase from Rolf Tibblin early, between th e first and seco nd check when Tibb lin's motorcycle seized. Kirker then led to the finish over 177 other riders - 178 counting th e do g, Koo kie, Jr. Jeff Kaplan (D-3 7) came in second on a borrowed 12 5 Husqvarna while Am ateur Ron Flo renc e was top District 38 rider, finishin g t hird on a 250 Monoshock Yamaha. The EI Cajo n Motorcycle Club sp on sored the hard, tough 120-mil e desert race with a big drawing of riders fro m Districts 3 7, 38, Arizona, and o ne fro m Michigan. T he race started from a o ne-row line faci ng no rth fro m near Plast er City . The co urse we nt to t he west side of Sup erstition Mount ain, o n to seven miles beyond the mo untain before turning back down the Caresa wash described as being like a freewa y to Painted Gorge. Ran by Painted Gorge, back tracking on p ar t of a 250 ORV co urse and to a railro ad tru ss bridge before the home check co mpleting the 60 -mile loop . The leaders took 90 minutes per loop. No rt h o f Superstition Mountain, the rid ers were warned t hat getting off th e co urse by 15 o r 20 feet co uld m ean 30 or 4 0-fo o t drops. At the rail road undercrossing near the finish of the first lo op , Kirker led Lynn Brown by four minutes. The following order at that time was Jeff Kaplan in th ird , Rick Finger, Ron Florence, Rick Lee, Bobby Niles , Boyd Taylor, an d Larry Hastin, Kirker had abo u t the same lead at the finish, but the o ther positions had ch an ged . The fin ishing order was Kirker, . Kaplan, Florenc e, Brown, Lee , Tayl or, Eric k Esswein, Finger, Bobby Niles, W. C. Thorton, and Bill Halb ert. Brown and Fing er wer e tied at th e start of the rac e for the Number One
