rn See America's E SRA will ch ec k it out and adj us t the chec k. Mileages on th e firs t loo p were very erratic. Onone section it appeared that a . speed change was m issed by the course layout people and a check was co mp ute d t o th e wrong average, throwing it o ff by t h ree m in utes. The course itself wa s very inte resting and fun. Woody Johnso n and fa mily had laid it ou t and did a very good job too. The loop had some real ly neat canyons b ut n o thi ng su per har d . Turns were m arked so mewhat erratic, causing a nu m b er of riders to ov ershoot, but no t h ing serious. The fin ish of the first loop wa s off by .4 o f a m ile , an d sin ce it was a "secret" A rewarding ride with a rewarding end. check, (y o u had to arrive o n yo ur minute) it caused so m e more hair pulling. There w ere a n umber of riders present, with no speedometers or watches who had just co me out for the ride. For them it was great, but for the ti mekee pers it m ean t ulcers. One maj o r safety criticism. The first loop crossed th e maj o r dirt road leading into the pits, but there was no flagman present. A number of cam p ers were still st reaming in t o the area creat ing a dangero us situatio n. The second loo p hea ded westward into the Rand Hills, down so me tight little canyo ns, up a sandwash , ove r a little hill in to t he first check of the second loo p , which happened t o be the tiebreaker. The loop then ran down a sandwash in to Fre mont Valley , turned East t o wards Govern ment Peak, an d ran cross-co un try for a co nsiderable d istance. Finally t he co urse turned up into the hills, at a moderate 14 m p h and the riders kep t anticipating a check around every turn. There w er e a lot of good spots fo r chec ks bu t no thing was t he re. Riders kne w t he re j ust had to be a ch ec k around the next corner. Surp rise ! The tiebreaker turned out to be the only check on th e entire loop. Th e finish m ileage was off again, t his ti me to the tune of o ne whole mil e ! Timekeeping aspects of the enduro weren 't impressive, but the people had a good ti me and that's what it's all about. If SRA would pay a little mo re attent io n to mi leage and clocks, they would have the best of two worlds, a go od ride for both the non-serious riders and t he ti mekeepers. This was Woody 's first attem p t a t plotting m ileages and I'm sure he will learn fro m h is mi stakes. He lays out a good fun course. I even saw San ta Claus come in on a Yamaha End uro bike at. t he finish. I heard rumors he had paid the kids a su prise visit on Saturday an d disp en sed a lot of candy an d such. I also heard so me very good egg nog was dispensed in very lar ge quanities. That co uld acco un t for the p its bei ng unusually quiet • o n Saturday nigh t.
