EOpinion ~ jllllllllllllllll ~ (Continued from page 22) E make the promoters money, so why shouldn't all the riders go home with something? Imagine what professional football, baseball or basketball would be like if only the best players got paid. The places of the other players or defensive men who couldn't score points all the time would soon be taken up by people who weren 't as good. When professionals get paid for what they do, they do a better job, the best come out to compete, and the whole sport benefits. It's time the AMA makes changes in its purse structure before another MX Series is killed off. lrl t- en -; \.0 -; ... ~ ..0 E ~ u Jim Gianatsis ~ ... Cl WRITIN AROUND The Bailey Barnum School oJ Stadium Styling Welcome to the School of Stadium Styling and Profiling. I'm professor Barnum and today I will be teaching you a few of the techniques the experts use that will improve your performance in stadium motocro ss. The most important thing is 42 walk the course. Only by walking the course and carefully observing the TV camera locations can you determine where to cross up , hang off, wheelie and all the rest. While your co mpetition is wasting time racing, y o u can be co nce ntrating on the most important thin g - showing off . The start is very important, because that is where the m ost pictures are taken. You want to be out in fro nt, or at leas t close to the camera. Turns. There are two types of turns in Stadium Styling: I) the Nerf Tum and 2) t he Body Check Tum. The Nerf Tum is where you ride over your head going into the tum and ride ove r your competition coming ou t. The Body Check Turn is similar to the Nerf Tum, except that your competition rides over you. Ban n er Draggin g. Every stadium stylist should know the fine points of Banner Dragging. The trick is to wind enough of the banner rope around your axle to get a good grip , then carry the banner like a tail fla pping behind you a hundred yards or so for several laps. Prac tice is the key here. jumps. There is o nly one kind of jump in Stadium Styling - the Profile jump, which looks great in pictures taken from the left or righ t side. The Crossup jump used to be popular b ut has gone out of fashion. When making a profile jump, strive for distance. Remember, it isn't how fast you go, but how many flashbulbs you set off that counts in Stadium Styling. the sign of an Wheelies are accomplis hed Stadium Stylist. Get the old front wheel up at every opportunity an d hold it as long as yo u can. T here are three basic wheelies: I) the Straight-Ahead Wheelie (no class). 2) the Crossed-up Wheelie and 3) the Crossed-up Wheelie with One-handed Victory Sign . Here again, practice, practice, practice. Crashing a nd Sco oter Kic king. Having selected the best camera location to crash in front of in your walk around ill the co urse , learn to get off as spectacularly as possible. Immediately upon picking yourself up, kick your scooter on ce with great emotion. Then remove your helmet and throw it at the fallen machine. This goes great with the grandstands, and sometimes wins Oscars. That 's all we have time for in this lesson, but if yo u sign up for my post-graduate course, we will go into the fine points of Cork Popping, Trophy Queen Kissing, and Autograph Signing. Remember, if you aren ' t styling, you aren 't stadium racing. Chuck Clayton FREE WHEELING Ti me was, before I discovered motorcycles, I'd go with a buddy to Gabe's Bar in Seattle, we'd clop stereo headphones over our ears, listen to the house jazz, drink beer, get all fuzzy and design exotic sportscars on the backs of the bar napkins. None of the cars got built, Gabe's is gone, I've lost touch with Edensky the Mad Russian, and ~ow drink more wine than beer, yet the spirit lingers. Like I was jus t thinking, what a gas it would be to build a flat twin two-stroke, laid out like a BMW, with a 180-degree crank, rotary valve and induction through a common crankcase feeding both cylinders. Shaft drive, of course, with a trick fairing that ducted engine heat to your navel. Or, how ab out a V-4 - maybe one based on the top end components from the old CR92 Honda 125cc racing twins, to ta l displacement 250cc, hooked up to a six -speed gearbox. Cylinder banks at 90 degrees, with fuel inj ection . It could have leading axle forks, like the late BMWs, b ut not necessarily to obtain all that travel. Rat her to drop the entire fork asse mbly as low as po ssibl e, using d ro oping triple clamps. The calipers fo r the d ual discs would be m ounted bel ow the axle centerline, trailing the fork legs, and rear suspension would be by an underslu ng mon oshoc k, operating in te ns ion, rather than compression . Then how about the gasoline-electric trial s bike - us ing a DC traction motor built into the rea r hub. You'd eliminate the entire gearbox/clutch primary drive assembly, replacing it with a crank-driven generator. This would allow more flexibility placing the engine in the chassis, eliminating chain-drive constraints totally. just a couple wires running inside the swing arm ... Then someday, I want to build a motorcycle with a V· 12 engine. I don't care if it goes fast, I just like the way they sound. Got an idea for a chopper once, a with a molded solo mach ine sissy-barjcum full backrest and headrest. There'd be stereo earphones molded into either side of the headrest, a tape deck in the base, and a flip -down acrylic faceshield with edge lighting that plays a continuous light show. What a trip ! Then I finally figured out the motorcycle for the masses, anticipating Detroit's entry into the field. It wo uld have a stamped-steel mo nocoqu e sty led body-frame and a watercooled 750cc purshrod single, based on one cylinder of a Chevy V·8. No trans or clutch, just hang a torque converter on t he crank end and use one of those remote fluid drives in th e rear w heel hub. There could also be a racing version with a dip-brazed aluminum alloy frame ... Hey, what are you doing with those nets? Aww come o n, you guys. Iernme go. Hey! Hsheeelllp!
