through a ' ugh • philT ravfne. Ti m Lunde's lead blew up with the top end of his Suzuki leaving Wayne Boyer (CZ), Rich Eirstadt and Tommy Croft to pick up the first mota pieces. Rich Eirstadt and Honda teammate Tommy Croft gave Honda their first Support class win this series when the decimated field had finished for the day. The best the dominant Can -Am team could muster was a fourth and fifth from Buck Murphy and Mike Runyard. Wayne Boyer went 1-4 for third overall. First moto On the starting hill Steve Stackable dove his 400 Maico under Marty Smith and led the charge down the double plateaus of Banzai Hill . The lanky Texan effortlessly motored around the mile and one-half track to lead the first mota for almost the whole nine yards. On the first lap it was Stackable, Sernics, Smith, and Rex Staten. For thirty minutes Stackable, Semics, Smith, and DiStefano tried to erase each others' decals in every tum. Tony D was really cooking as he pic ked off Marty Smith, then two laps later Semics fell to Team Suzuki's future star. The four riders suddenly played 'after you Alphonse' with five laps to go when DiStefano too k the lead, Stackable fell back to fourth, Smith went to second, and Semics held third. With two laps to go DiStefano gained the valuable yardage that assured his victory over Marty Smith while Gary Semics' pipe dangled perilously from one bolt, stifling the green machine's power. Stackable , Gerrit 'Wolfie' Wolsink, and Brad Lackey gobbled the luckless Semics up to push him back to sixth. AMA professional motocross suffered its first tragedy when Jim West crashed at the base o r the Banzai uph ill. Twenty-three-year-o ld West got up and walked away, but was taken by ambulance later to Chapman Hospital were he died that night of internal inj uries. West's death added a so mber note to the end of the Trans-AMA Rich Eirstadt took the RC 250 Honda to the victory circle in what was probably his last ride on the Honda Team. The 40 International riders started the second moto by ducking the roosts of Gary Semics' umpteenth holeshot, For seven laps Semics and Stackable series.
