ack Jeff Eierstedt (250 Bul) were carrying on a little close order drill, but no passing. From a spectator's point of view, the race had become somewhat dull. A couple of laps from the end, Baron and Scott Gillman (250 Suz) started scrapping. Both were down a lap, b ut they came through the " scrambles section" by the pits neck and neck, flyi ng off the jumps in nearly complete togetherness. When they moved out of sight, Baron was leading, but people knew it could change in an instant. Bakken finished with nearly a 50-second lead over second. Adams was in second as the riders took the white flag, but he was so Iow a n gas that -towards the end of the last lap , the petcocks couldn't scavenge enough gas an d the engi ne died a cou p le of times. Rhyan and Eirestedt both got by , but Adams didn't lose any po sition s in clas s. Gillman wo n out in that dice with Baron, finis hi ng with his right leg eq ual to Baron's fro nt whe el. Coutts won the 125 class . although do wn a lap. The riders seemed to enjoy the 5.2-mile course. One rider said it was more of an "off-road" course than the S.C.O .R.E. bash at Riverside. Saddleb ack does have more elevation changes in its back section. Much of the course was slick hardpan, with black tire marks present in some corners. Bob Maynard's first This was promotion of this type of racing and the event went smoothly enough. It went well enough for Maynard and Saddleback owner Vic Wilson to promise more events of this nature. Malcolm Smith was entered in this race, but he didn 't show. Apparently he was driving in a pro rally the day before and for some reason wasn't able to get • to the park in time to race. Results in Results Section. S.A.M.HSMX Championships By Joe l Jamieson ORANGE, CAL, NOV. 22-23 The Second Annual High School State Championships was truly a high school affai r with all the flagging, scoring and starting of the races being handled by high school kids under the direction of the only "graduate" in the bunch , J im Manning. Jim, by the way, is the fellow wh o pu ts togeth er this whole high school MX tri p, so give the guy a hand. The event was a two -day h ap pen ing with the Beginners ru nning on Satu rd ay an d th e Junio rs an d Experts havin g it out on Sun day . In Sa tu rday's 10 0 clas s ac tio n, Ladell Eide from Gab r H.S., swe pt the pack with wins in all three mo t as ab oard his Honda. Eide made it two fo r two as he repeated his act of the 100 race in the 125 Divisio n 11 with a three-mote sweep. Taking the 25 0 Final was Brea Olinda student, Ken Drake. Ken was followed by Bob Hanson, mounted on Suzuki and attending Foothill High. Pat McBride almost had a grand slam in the Open race on his Yamaba with two-one-one rides which was enou~h to hold back second-place man (boy?) Bob Brown from Huntington Beach. Oh, almost forgot, the winner, McBride, hauls from Pacifica. Getting into some of Su nday 's action, Bryon Barr, who rides for Harry's Cycle, Garry Faulks dominated the 250 Experts at S.A.M :s High School Championship. . A.C . tackled the d readed new 5 mi le co u rse (and the competi tion) in th e grueling 75 mile classic Baja De Saddleback Professional off-road race in Orange County, California. He took first overall in a record 1 hour, 8 min. and 54 seconds .. . a full 50 seconds ahead of the next fastest rider. His choice o f gas tan ks? H u stler , of course!
