The opening race October 4 saw John Johnson emerge in the 360·A Pro class as the man to beat. Johnson garnered 300 points by winning his heat race, Semi, and Main . 11k ex -Dumas High School standout also cas hed in wi th SI 00. Last year's overall point king, Bill Brown, was involved in a collision with Johnson and Brown wound up on the short end of the stick. The mishap occurred in the semifinal race, eliminating Brown from qualifying in the main. Meanwhile Johnson drew pole position, held off an onslaught of riders through the number one tum, then built up a lead with each completed lap. After finishing the 20 lap race,Johnson had lapped five racers en route to victory. However, Johnson's dominance of the Pro class was short lived as out of towners, Wayne Caswell of Pampa, Guy McClure of Ft. Worth. Clovis' Alton Mitchell, and Merlyn Plumlee of Colorado Springs. came to Amarillo for round two to unseat the 19·year-old. They were not the only ones gunning for Johnson as Tascosa senior Benny Spears and veteran Randy Carthel also issued a challenge to the early point leader. This challenge proved successful as J oh nson failed to qualify in the main by only mustering a meager fourth place finish in the semi race . McClure was the leader in the Semi while J ohnson was righ t behind. Johnson m ad e his bid to pass. wound up spinning and losing two valuab le places. McClure we nt on to wi n the Semi and Pam pa's Way ne Caswell easily won the other thus se tting a showdown in the Main. Caswell survived the treacherous number one tum in the Main after drawing pole position with McClure right on his heels. The Ft. Worth racer rode second the en tire 20 lap race and was hampered when a lapped rider somehow got between Caswell and the oncoming McClure. The slow rider was finally waved over to make room for McClure and his un successful bid to outlast Caswell at the finish line. However, Caswell wo n, winning 300 points and $100 in prize money. McClure took home 275 points and $75 while Amarillo's Randy Carthel placed third for 50 additional points and $50. Carthel's final point total was 200 and is now in third place after two races with 400 total points. Despite having an off night, Johnson still is on top with 425 points and is tied with Ben ny Spears, who placed fourth in the Main. • Charles White wins JZ Enduro By Kenni Spahr TULSA. OKLA., NOV. 16 The Tu lsa Trailriders once again hosted another excellent enduro at the John Zink Ranc h. The weather was perfect , the ranch trails were in excellent co nditio n but the turno ut was ligh t with only 157 entries. . The average speed was changed four times between 24 and 12 mph. Vern Street placed the check points in such a way that nearly everyone lost early and late points. Charles White of Tulsa won overall with 11 points. (Charles also was in a three-way tie for overall at the recent Shores Lake Enduro near Ft. Smith, Arkansas with one point. but due to the tie breaker was second in class and third overall.] Jim Beckham of Tulsa was A class Champion with 12 points and Bob See was B class Champion wi th 19 points lost. The classes were split with the usual MIA uA" and UB" classes but the Trailriders added a " C" class for the Novice riders which was well accepted with 45 entries. M. Doughty was the Novice Champion with 31 points. In an effort to teach (?) the Powder Puff class how to ride an enduro, the Trailriders set their average at 12 mph. This theory, which other promoters migh t note. should encourage more wo men to enter e ndures since t heoretically it wo uld not be a race b u t an enduro - co mbining ridi ng and time keeping. Helen Syler was t he best timekeeper with seven late poin ts. This repo rter did n ot do so well , dropping 19 early points, and 17 of them at one check. Oh well - live and learn. I'm beginning to like second place! The Senior class also was well represented with nine entries. D. McCubbin was top Senior with 97 points. • Results in Results Section.
