Jeff Steele and Ed Unini had a sling-shot battle of their own going for. fourth on their Honda 750s and appeared in danger of locking frames several times at well over 100 mph. Jim Haberlin had been left at the start line in the Super Cafe race, but his pit crew made the necessary repairs, and Jim came back with a vengeance to grab Open Production honors on his 750 Triumph . Ron HIarka (Yam) pulled an upset victory over class poin ts 'champ ion Dain (Yam) in the 250cc Gingerelli Production race. David Norton gr abb ed third on his Montesa as J ohn Oleson (Suz) ran off the track at full thro ttle trying to get by on th e final turn of the last lap. With this season's 350cc Production class championship at stake John Glover came in with a narrow three-poin t lead over defending champion Alan Gingerelli. Alan's bike refused to start be cause of carburetor trouble - l'l!er traced to a bad batch of pre-mix. As the . field revved their engines on the starting grid, John Cermak, Alan's brother Dain, and Dick Fuller each offered to let Alan borrow their bikes fo r this crucial race. Based on Fuller's lap times in the Super Cafe race, Alan chose Dick's bike. It turned out to be a wise move as Alan was able to sneak past Glover as they cranked over for the uphill lefthander on the first lap. Alan pulled ahead to win by three seconds, tying him in points with Glover wi th only o ne .race left this season. However, in the National trials, which feature European-type sections - wider with fewer tight tums - Marland has beaten Bernie the past two y ears. Finishing third in this trial was Mark Eggar (Hon) followed byJeff Fish (Mon) and Andre Plouffe (Bul]. Jeff and Andre (on a 396 BuI?) have really come on these past few months perhaps their experience on th e National circuit is starting to payoff. Gary LaPlante (Bul) , one of Arizona's t op riders, now living here, had his bes t ATA finish yet corning in seventh. The trial, consisted o f a fairly difficult 7.5-mile lo op ri dden three times. The sectio ns, based on the sco res in each class, w ere reasonable, however, some di d · degrade considerably as th e day wore on due to the lack of rain this year. Typical was Expert Sectio n eigh t which consisted of an uphill cli mb over large b o ul d ers" a left tum do wnhill , a righ t turn uphill , a tight left tum an d d ownhill in to a gu lly. Mos t exper ts made it this far dro pping o nly 0-2 points. However an other tight tum uphill was req ui red here an d m any, excluding the four-stroke Hondas, were washing-o ut an d stalling at th is poin t due to the loose dirt. The onl y o n es making it up the hill and out in the last two loo p s were the riders that were really gassing it at the bottom. Ron Busch had one of the most spectacular rides here when he went u phill full thro ttle, turned left to exit, then had to muster up all the body english at his disposal to avoid Jeff Fish's dog, who was sunning himself at the exit. In the Amateur class, Greg Carter (Mo n ) edged ou t Raymond Saffa (Bul) followed by Scott Parker (Mo n). These three have finished very high in the past few trials and should be transferring into the Expert class soon. The Novice class with 57 riders, was won by Bruce Bolden (Yam) follo we d by David Webster (Yam) and Marland Whaley, Sr . (Hon) third. Marland (Sr.) has just started co mpeting again an d is doing very well . O.C.T., fo llo wing th e suc cessfu l V.O.T.E. an d Plonker trials, also added a Begin ner's class to this event which drew 22 riders : David Rofsk y (Mon) t ook first fo llowed by Chris Ya te s (Yam ) who had to beat Donna Evans (Oss) in a post-meet run-off fo r secon d. Herber t Krauch (Yam) tookthe Kid's class with Scott Witt (Hon) an d Brian Schurman coming in second and third re sp ectively.
