Th e isol ated fro nt gate of the park m ay have appeared to be an easy mark for the lone thief who attempted the hit around 2 p.m . but unfortunately fo r him, the gate atte nda nt was o ff-d uty Ft. Worth patrolman Glen At kins. Nea rly subdued by an electric stun gun, Glen managed to put a .3 5 7 slu g through th e thief's windshield, showerin g him with glass, and it was allover but the paperwork. The incident caused a co nsiderable delay as track pe rsonnel and am bulance crews rus h ed to the sce ne, m akin g a short day fo r Open Intermed iate and Expert classes, who se second mo to s were called o ff d ue to darkness at 5 :30. Bob by Pic kard (Pen) co n tinued his dominan ce of area m o to cross by clear victo ries in 25 0 and Open Expert action, wh ile t he 125 Expert fina l saw a tu rn ab out in the last lap th at caused a three-way tie fo r first overall. Mike Hullett (Suz) and Eddie Walker (Yam ), seco nd and th ird at the chec kers of the op en er, fought fo r th e lead in the final, with first rou nd winner Sh awn Smit h (Yam ) suffering a bad start and crashes. Both Hu llett an d Walker went down several turns from 't h e finis h , . and previou sly unno t iced Ricky Blackwell l Yam) came across firs t fo r the win at 5-1. Goodson wen t unchallenged then for 2-1 mar ks , as Athens remoun te d for seco nd OA at-1-5. Wayne Williams d rove h is RM thro ugh th e rain for 2-2 finishes an d first 250 Novice, edging Bobby Gr een (Suz , 1-3) and Stan Cross (Bul.4- I ).
