year later Goodwin struck out on his own and be came one of the lar gest ro ck concert promoters on the West Coast in 1969-70. 'He staged co n cer ts for Janis Jop lin, Jimi Hen dr ix , the Stones, Chicago, th e Beach Boys, Seals and Croft, and other greats. He learned that ro ck and roll wa s th e sch ool of hard kn ocks, "because everyb ody will s tab you in th e back ." But Mike's sm all co mpany had overex tended by spreading its meager capital a b it too thin over the ex pected gross inc o me . The death blo w came from Mai Lai, Kent State, an d a bear market that laid th e Woo dstock Era to its fin al gra ve. A t the end, the company had o nly made fo ur percen t of its expected gross, which disappointed Mike eno ugh to bu y a VW camper and split to Alas ka with Diane for four months, whe re he had ti me to hunt elk and refl ect on his life. He th en ven tured down to Cen tral America on an underwater mo vie project. While there, Mike received some motorcycle magazine s from his , ad agency that h e owned in San Diego. He read where sh ort track had been promoted in Madison Square Garden and said , " If Madison Square Garden can sell out short track , motocross, we think, we can do a better job!" So he went to Sacramento an d promoted a $3,000 purse event that was sponsored by Ol ympia beer a t the Cal Exp o fairgr ounds with 13 ,56 2 people sho w ing up to see it. Though it wasn 't perfect , it had been des cribed as "Woodstock West ." Things we re rolling aga in . Mike th en d ecided to go b ig time with m o to cro ss and set up three AMA with ov ersized pu rses at even ts Sacramen to, ' Saddleback, and San Diego . He almost lost h is shirt , b ut by th en Mike had n egotiated for the L.A. Coliseum , and spen t his last few bu cks ge tting th e SuperBowl o n its feet. He asked five we ll known inves tors to ba ck his idea, only to get laughe d at. But Mik e fin ally got the money to fin an ce t he event, and needless to say , th e first Su perBowl was a su ccess.
