Hannah & Rubly take Pro classes at Carlsbad By Jon Hayt CARLSBAD, CAL. NOV. 23 A beautiful sunny day greeted the racers -at Carlsbad Raceway this Sunday and though the track had been well watered, by the end of the day , the entire valley was a big dust bowl as the wind ceased early in the afternoon. This didn't seem to affect Bob Hannah on his new 20 Yamaha rid e, as he put on a show that proves that he is one Of the best CMC riders around. Hannah and Danny LaPorte (FRA) got off the line together in the first 125 Pr o race and the two were nec k and neck for the entire race with Danny holding th e lead: It looked as if LaPorte had the ra ce sewn up when Hannah beserked it at the finish line and cut off Danny a few feet from the line. Hannah just grabbed a handful of throttle and flew over the finish, totally out of control and crashed into the sto rm fen ce that follows th e track. He got up and ran around asking if he had won and wasn't even particularly bothered by his hurt wrist from the crash. LaPorte figured that it was no big deal be cause he fel t th at if getting yourself sent to the hospital to win was the key to success then he would let Hannah have it . Warren Reid (Hon) got the holeshot in the second moto with LaPorte and Hannah right on his tail. Hannah got by LaPorte about halfway through the first lap and from there the three stayed close together until Danny ate it under the bridge after the down hill . He was slow in getting back up and ended up in last place after the third lap. Danny decided to beserk it for a while and fInally caught the next-to-last-place rider and then crashed again , He got up, caught the rider again and was right with Hannah, who had taken over the lead, when Danny high-sided in front of the scoring tower. He de cided to take it easy and finish while Hannah ran away with the 125 Pro class. The 250 clas s was the clincher for Hannah, Bob Elliott (Mai) got the holeshot in the first moto and was hotly pursued by Hannah, Jeff Jennings (Bul) and Bill Rubly (Mai) . Bill was in third for th e first th ree laps when J eff Jennings slipped by him and started making tracks for Hannah. Elli ott and Hannah ha d take n up a sizabl e lead in ' th e me antime and the two began t o d ice it out. They traded pl aces three times on th e uphill in lap five, Elliott managed to hold his lead up un til the eighth lap when Hannah got by and too k the win. The second 250 race saw Rubl y get the holeshot and an early lead when two riders crashed on the downhill o n the first lap. One rider broke his arm and was pretty badly hurt. The race was halted so that the ambulance crew could get him off the track. With the res tart, Hannah got the holeshot and Rubly came o ut fourth. Hannah kept his lead and soon had a fast-fl ying Jeff Jennings . on his tail. Jennings was making time on Hannah when he c rashed and got back up, still in second but not close enough to Hannah t o be a threat. While Rubly may not hav e done so well in the 250 class , he more than made up for it in the 500 class. Bill showed the crowd why he is going to be . wearing the CMC Number One plate next year as he got the holeshot in the first race and won easily. Rubly decided that he would cruise the last moto and when Bob Maxwell (Bul) got the holeshot, Bill was forced to do some racing after he had worked his w ay to second. Maxwell held off Rubly's repeated charges and Bill decided to take it easy in the last race of th e season. • Results in Results Section. Jannings' lucky night at AME MX By Denise Beardshear RIDGECREST, CAL. , NOV . 16 The Ridgecrest motocross group recently joined the AME and put on th eir first big motocross race with a $1,000 purse. The response to their advertising and good purse actual ly brought out more riders than they were expecting. The sign up and practice were held up , but all the problems were resolved and the Experts ' did get their four lap s practice and the day started at about 9:30. One of the best races that this follower of the sp o rt has ever seen was the 125 Expert class in the first moto. The local hotshoe, Brad Ayre took the lead on his hot Honda, but Jim Hale (Hon) was determined to take it away VALENCIA, CA L., NOV. 14 Th e 125 Pros stole the show Friday night at the Dunes. Jerry Shore (Han) grabbed the lead in the first mota with Andy Jannings (Hon) and Bobby Jones (Hon) in hot pursuit. Jerry outrode the pair almost the en itre race , but crashed by the tower and dropped back. At the same time, Jones slippeJ by Andy to 't a ke over the lead. Sho re , meanwhile, was back up and managed to cut inside the third-place rider, but couldn't catch Jannings and Jones. Jones shot into the sec ond moto lead but slowed with a flat ti re . Jannings got bv to take the overall. Shore was running third, but DNFed, leaving second to Jones. Rob Jensen went down hard in the back section during th e first moto of the combined 250 Pro/Intermediate/ Junior race. Ambulance atten da n ts at the scene signaled riders to cool it , and in the con fusi on , some thought the race had be en called. Among th em was the first Amateur Joe Howton (Bul) , who with one lap to go , pulled off to check on the fellow rider. He was appropriately credited with the moto win , though. Will Harper (Mai) topped Greg Oes ch (Kaw ) fo r the Pro win . There was a slight del ay while the ambulance took Jensen to the hospital. It was reported that he was still unconscious on arrival. . J an Kline (Ho n ) was a shining example of just how fast the ladies are these da ys. The 100s started first, then th e Powder Puffs. Jan, along wi th the entire womens' class, caught up to the IOOs and picked them off one by one . .. much to their amazement! Kell y Bartlett (Hon) came in second ; and Wayne Craig Nelson (Suz) McKelvey (Yam ) took first in their respective classes. AME anno unced that night racing at the Dunes will end fo r the season on December 5. • Fish leads 0-37 women's movement By Den ise Beardshear SIMI VALLEY, CAL. , OCT. 26 District 37's Women's Division has certainly gained spectator pop ularity during the seaso n, and the Dou ble Crossers MX was no exception. Sue Fish (Yam) smoked the pack with Johanna Stenersen (Yam) a ways back in second. Chell e Bly th was looking for her fifth transfer to Ex pert, but blew up her bike in practice. A fellow rider was kind enough to loan her a BuI, but it was all poor Chelle could do to make it up the hill! Halfway through the first moto, Kim Byers (Hon) lost c ontrol on the long downhill, and culminated her tank slapper in a royal endo at the bottom. With nowhere to ~o , leading Novice, Linda Stinebaugh (Suz), chose to hit Kim 's bike rather than its rider to the right, or Charl ene Higgens (Yam) to the left. Both Linda and Kim will be out o f the racing for a while as a result. Louis Darling (Hon) walked away with the 125 Expert win, ahead of Tyrone Brown (Hon) . Jim Connolly
