I Desert hotline ~ way. SoCal had so me very interesting terrain on the second loop incl uding a railroad crossing which had the riders puzzled as the tracks were on the side of a mountain leading out into nowhere. It seems SoCai found some abandoned mining rail tracks and decided to have fun with them. At the finish of the 60-mile run (clocked on a calibrated VDO) which was advertised as 80, Breker led Cordis Brooks (Bul) in but Cordis picked up the win along with 250 honors when Bryan was disqualified. Second was A.C. Bakken (Hus) with Larry Roeseler (Hus) coming in third overall, second 250 Expert. E 10 C'J l-< Q) ..0 a Q) > o Z > ... oJ c Z et oJ > ''e"t " oJ > III :-"""""I (g I- o :t 0. Jeff Kaplan is d irected o ut of a SoCal f ield check. Brooks wins race, turkey at SoCal H & H By Larry Langley OLANCHA, CAL., NOV . 16 When SoCal's elaborate plans for a point-to-point Hare and Hound fell through, they had the foresight to apply for a permit in the area used last year, wisely avoiding cancellation. Listening to the riders griping about riding the "same old used areas, " you would think SoCal would have entries coming out their ears. But . apparently a lot of riders just wouldn't drive the extra hour to partake in totally different riding which ranged from difficult and challenging to fast, fun terrain. Last year's bomb run brought out a lot of complaints so this year SoCai used a long sand area which ran roughly parallel to the highway. At first the bomb area was somewhat rough due to the sharp 'ridges on the sand but as the riders practiced, the sand became much smoother. At 10 o'clock the Experts and Amateurs kicked their machinery into action and at .the bomb it was Bryan Brecker (Kaw) followed by A.C. Bakken (Hus) and Cordis Brooks (Bul) . Brecker stretched out a one minute lead by the end of the second lo op but it was all for n aught as a written protest was handed to referee Bob Hayes contending that Bryan used a road on the way to the bomb. A check with the club members stationed along the road co n firm ed the protest and Bryan was disqualified. I talked to Bryan to get his side of it and he told me he indeed go t on the ro ad for a little ways but claimed he Kat right Marc Cartwright, bl indfold and all , wrestles a t urkey to the ground. 8 off when waved off by SoCai members. It is not known whether Bryan will protest to the Competition Committee but he feels he won the race fair and square since he didn't have much of a lead at the bomb and outrode the field from there. It should be mentioned that the riders' instructions can tained a warning to stay off of the road but Bryan admitted he didn't read the instructions. The first loop consisted mostly of fifth gear sandwashes and dusty hilly trails with some good rocks thrown in . Cordis got by A.C. and that's the way they ran all the way to the finish. In the meantime, the Novices finally got off (some literally) with DRA Amateur Vance Schmid (Yam) falling down, and still leading at the bomb.. Apparently some of the D-37 stewards just do n't believe that t he DRA racers are for real. Vance opened up a big lead and held it all the way. Am ateur Mike Edmonson (400 Yam) led Mike Patchen (250 Yam) and the rest of the Amateurs all the Brent Wallingsford makes his way past the old m in ing railro ad t racks on SoCal's second loop. The father/son team of T om Zarp and Ed Zarp did p retty good with Ed turning in a fine ride for eighth overall, second Heavyweight Amateur. Old dad took first Senior h eavyw eight followed by Kj-less J ohn McGowan on his green Kaw . J ohn gave KJ a re st since he rode Ho petown both days. Marc Cartwri gh t (100 KTM ) totally dom inated the Trail class and w orked his tail off in the sand. Many of th e smaller bikes had a tough time in the deep sand an d so ~t uphill s. Dawn Grant crashed many times ("I lost count") but still made it in first girl on her 175 Husky. Trudy Beck (175 KTM) is back and a second proved her injury is healed. Debbie Graziano, on a 125 Ya maha Mono, beat Linda Griffing (250 Yam) for the Women's Amateur honors. When the Novices showed up it was still Vance Schmid with a seven-minu te lead. Second Novice in and first he avyweight was R. Kovaks on a Bultaco who aced out Paul Christensen (250 Yam). First 175 Novice was Gary Graham on a 175 Yamaha. Walter Sheek (125 Mono) nabbed a second and wanted me to be sure and mention it. ("It don't happen too often.") Special mention should go to first Trail Novice Bob Kiker (Pen) as he smoked a lot of bigger bikes. Way down towards the back June Elias snuck her way into first Women's Novice on her 25 0 Yamaha. After the res ults were figured, all class winners got a cha nce to nab t h em selves . a really live turkey. SoCal set up a ring with the blindfolded class win ners ttying to catch one of four gobblers. It was a lot of fun and Cordis Brooks, Mitch Payton (I forgot to men tion that Mitch got first Trail Amateur) Dic k Kelsey and an u nidentified rider got to take their Thanksgiving dinner ho me with them. • Results in Results Section.
