Sun day to watch th e bo ys and see w hat t hey "put o u t" when they a re rac ing . I assured the m that they wo uldn't have the "guts" to get out there and battle it out with 20 or so more riders. This to o was cu t fro m my letter when published. A few days after my letter was published. I received the article cut from the paper with a note written across it as follows : "Let them go to h ell and buy their own land. " I am in co m p le te sympathy with ~Ir. Hefferlin, be cause I know what it costs for a bike, boots. leathers, goggles, helmet, gloves, not counting the .m o ney spent for maintenance . As a parent, I have gone the complete route. If Mr. Hefferlin will contact me I will be more than happy to try to help all I can. My boys are my pride an d joy a nd I hate to see them payout S 15 a year, for what? Our family hasn't found a money tree as yet. MRS. B. L. However, I wonder if this unorganized trail r id e has been thought out beyond the surface and into the possible po litical ra mifications. At p rese nt this is a political battle we're engaged in and can only be properly fought by political means through proper co u rt proceedings. It is my understanding that part of the reason for denial of the "1975 Barstow to Vegas" permi t was due to an inco mplete environmental impact study. This study must be completed, as the future Barstow to Vegas races will be based on the outcome. A trailride at this time would do insurmountable damage to the existing studies. I think many potential riders are not aware that "green stickles" will be required. as well as permission to pass from all private land owners whose land you will be crossing at various times on yo u r way to Vegas. You can bet there will be rangers and law enforcement agencies there to enforce these laws and issue citations. Doesn 't lo o k as though the Sierra Club is saying much at this ti me concerning the ride, but I can hear th em now come the day after, "See we told you motorcycle riders are all a bunch of de st ruc tive ho o dl u m s with comple te d isregard for law and order." This is exactly the kind of thing t hat will be thrown at all of us and th us do irreparable da mage to t he desert riders image and give the Sierra Club more am munition to use against the very fine efforts of the San Gabriel Valley Motorcycle Club. If current lawful efforts fa il, then you can be sure that co m e this time next year, I'll be' right there with you. Ple ase , for now, let's use our brains and save our brawn . SCHMITT 521 Fanita Way Menlo Park, CA 94025 I would like to commend you on the wonderful job you have done in keeping you r readers informed of the various public meetings held by the Forest Service. It seems that the Forest Service has done a poor job of publicizing these meetings through the local news media, at leas t in our area. Cycle News is about the only way one finds out about them. It is unfortunate that with all the publicity you have given these meetings, and the stress you have p ut on the impo rtance of atten di ng them. few people actually participate. In our a rea the Fo rest Service personnel always o u tnu m ber the general public in atte nda nce. As a mo to rcycle deale r I have publicized the meetings in my store by posting the time and location. I encourage my customers to get involved an d I'm usually successful in getting a few of them to attend. Perhaps if all motorcycle dealers posted these That's a pretty heavy request. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, 6755 Elkridge Landing Rd., Linthicum, Maryland 21090 would probably have such information available . • . Editor Sticky inqu iry With regard to Mr. Paul Hefferlin's letter appearing in t he October 28, 19 75 issue of Cycle News: I wrote to t he Union Tribun e abo ut one year ago with regard to t he very same t hing he spoke of - where is the la nd that we we re p romised for o ur riders? My letter was ed ited q uite a bit before it was published in the "Letter to the Editor " colu mn. One t hing I asked was what " slush" fu nd the money was goi ng into, ' a nd I st ill wo uld like to know. I also challenged so me 0 f the gru mps to co me out to Carlsbad some Hollister Hills. Ocotillo Wells, Marysville, Davis, Me Gill, La Grange, Tula re. Baldwin Park, Long Beach, San J ose, Los Angeles Cty. are a few of the areas acquired and developed with "G reen Stickle ' money. More areas are in the wo rks; Hungry Valley, Palmdale and R iverside Cty. are three proje cts currentl y under consid eration for state or county veh icu lar rec reation areas. One problem facing the program is the fact that some local agencies aren't coming in for the money alloted. We will publish th e latest status report on th e Off -R oad Vehicle Program of the California Departm ent of Parks and Recreation within the next couple of weeks: If you have specific questions regarding the program you can write to Mr. R onald D. Rawlings, Supervisor, Trails and Off-Road Vehicle Section. PO Box 2390 , Sacrament o, CA 95 811 ... Ed itor M.O.R.E. scores again If you did not attend the Johnny Horizon Clean-up in the Rand Open Area you missed the following announcement. In a discussion with Mr. Ed Has tey , state direc tor of the BLM, M.O.R.E. was ab le to obtain a 45-day extension on the time limit for replying to the Draft Management Framework Pla n for Nat ional Resource Lands in EI Paso and Red Mountain Planning Units. The new date is January I instead of t he p ublished date of November 17 . T his was do ne so that every off-roader would have a chance to write a letter to the BLM an d let t he m know what is wrong wi t h t heir p lan . Now th at yo u hav e .plen ty of tim e, be sure to write that letter. Do it right away and get it over wi t h, otherwise th e extended dead line will slip u p on yo u a nd it wi ll be to o late. Then o ne of these days yo u will be wondering what happened to the desert that yo u used to ride in! RUSS SANFORD M.O.R.E. Unfair ruling? I would like to comment on a ne w District 37 rule concerning entries in Grands Prix. The rule places all ' 0·3 7 riders in front positions regardless of post mark date. Since I' m o u t of district, I was shov ed to the back of Hop e t own. I drive at least 250 to 300 miles to co mpete in District 37 Grands Prix and to be p laced at the back o f t he p ack doesn't seem exactly fair to m e. After looking back at the las t Great Bear G P and Viewfinde rs G P, I would bet at least one third of th e entries were from Districts 35, 3 6 a nd 38 . I think it's sad that competition is put second behind where yo u live. LIN DA SHATKA 0 -35 Fres no , Cal if.
