I went poking around in the bushes after the race to see if novice riders do exist. Found one, Steve Reynolds. He won the 125 Novice class on a Monoshock Yamaha, but fo r guidance he had qualified asso ciates all mounted o n simil ar machinery . His associates. Danny Waters won the 125 Am ateur class and T u cker Hendrix was first in the 12 5 Exp ert clas s an d fourth place overall. The club, Dirt Riders Unlimited, have it together with a large work force paying attention to every detail, but fo remost policy at all times is to leave the desert clean . • Results pending. (Continued /rom page 8) Thornburg leads Gila, Monster hunt By James Brammer SAN DIEGO, CAL., NOV. 9 Gila monsters are frightening. They ap pear as mini-dinosaurs in the deserts o f the Southwest and Mexic o. For the Dirt Riders Unlimited District 38 desert race billed as a Gila Monster Hunt , 13 7 lusty racers made the 10 o'cl ock start fo r a 90-mile event: Apparently monster sightings were made, for in 2 8 minu tes Arnie Gruner and eventual winner Bill Thornburg were back ha ving completed the first of 3 , thirty-mile loops. They didn 't slow o n the second loop either, but Gruner seized his Grand Prix Husqvarna o n the start of the third loop . and he went into the DNF class . Thornburg went on to win on his much older 400 Husqvarna, but it may have been a gila monster he hit when he left Weary, but happy, Bill Thornburg won the 0-38 Gila Monster Hunt.
