Yamaha-mounted Wayne Dohrman made a m ad dash for first in the second moto but his DN F was too much o f a handicap in the first moto, giving second to J o hn Gu nge. Hard-dri ving Rick Lo ngyear just co uld n ' t get it to ge ther to ho ld off neigh bor Steve Scalzo an d his Husky in 250 Novice mo tos. Henry So rcel li is proof that practice mak es perfect. Henry and his mach in e have improved each race an d today wrapped up two firsts in th e 125 Beginners to gr aduate to the Novi ce ranks. It was rumored in the pits th at th e reason for Henry 's drive and en th usiasm was o b ta ine d from the half-page photo of him in Cycl e News when he took fifth pla ce at 395. Seems his ph oto inspired him and now he is dreaming of a full -page photo for his fan club he organ ized . Kevin Le Febure " didn't lo ok too shab by eith er as he dash ed throu gh the 100 Novi ce races with two firsts whil e the real battle went on for second between Steve Oldfield and Rick Guilmette. In t he 25 0 Beginners, Greg Hop e set th e pace o n an RM 25 0 and co pped the win , whil e second-place Pat Hoglan (CZ ) fo llowed in close pursuit o n ly to end th e mot o with a flat tir e. Bo bby Jones (Yam) was closing t he gap on leader Lloyd llilton (Ho n) in t he 12 5 Beginners wh en J o nes high -sided at sp eed o n t he downhill and was so undly trounced by his ca rt-whe eling bike , putt ing him o u t o f ac t io n . Hil ton , too , had problems, gett ing caug h t in the first tu rn traffic. Eventually , it was Ray To rres . (Yam) who scored the o verall with a consiste nt string of thirds. 125 J unio r Paul Ivie (Yam) looked to hav e t hings well under co nt ro l while in the lead u ntil h is chain snap pe d three laps fro m the end. Gen e Schrank (Yam) too k tha t mot o, and ev en th ou gh (vie cam e b ac k t o win th e oth er two , there was no way he co uld ace o u t Schrank fo r the overall. Jim Garton (Yam) w:,s holding off Gary Cain (Kaw ) In the 250 Intermediates when Cain hit a slower rider and went down, giving Gart on some breathing room. The next mote, however, Cain go t the holeshot, and it was Garton's turn t o taste the tr ack, as he too went d own. In the ir last moto, tied in points, both go t away cleanly and were runnin g a truly fin e battle wh en Cain di d an ab sol utely sp ect acul ar fifth -gear endo off th e big j ump, giving • th e fin al victory bac k to Garton .
