Bower made a determined effort to add the Jubilee to his other Southern California National win, the Red Garter. Ben lost four poin ts , which mayor may not pu t him in contention for the overall win. The first loop was billed as an easy " C" rider loop and it was. In fact it was too easy, according to the Criders 1 talked to. Larry Potter is ab out as close to the average C rider as you can get. Larry had the misfortune of a flat front tire on his 175 Can -Am at the five mile check but figured, wh at th e hell? and just kept on riding. At the end of the 39·mile loop Larry dropped only two points and complained it was just a little too easy. Th e clubs are doing a good thing in promoting the "C" class, but the loop should be preparation for the day when the C rider receives the magic transfer ride and finds himself on the harder lo o ps. I'd certainly not advocate a "killer" type loop but maybe include a medium to hard uphill or two and a couple of rock fields to test their mettle. Improvement better start while they are C riders, not when they are B's, Rider instructions warned the C riders, to stay off of the second and third loops for good reason. They were tough, up to the national enduro standards. There were a number of good rocky gnarly uphills, tight canyons with rocky dropoffs, off-camber hills, and really just about everything you could think of to make the ride interesting and challenging. Speed averages at times were just about unattainable, but then the course would drop into a easy section, allowing the riders to get back on time. At least so me riders. It wasn't a hare and hound type enduro ; you had to have your timekeeping together or you found yourself surprisingly early. The Checkpoints Club relishes scouting out little canyons in the back sections of Lu cerne Valley, and delight in proving wrong the skeptics who say there isn't an yt h ing new to ride there. Smart riders had the foresight to mount new tires for the end uro, knowing there would be numerous uphills to co n ten td with . By enduro's end, those new knobbies looked pretty frazzled. Rocks do terrible things to rubber. The only problem was one uphill canyon which turned into a bottleneck for most riders as the one line through got clogged with st alled motorcycles. It's pretty tough when laying out an enduro to forecast ex actly what's going to happen. but sinc e the second loop crew had to pil e ro cks at the bottom of a rocky led ge to rid e up, this canyo n lth ey must had /an idea .
