Literature Bob Connors helped open the MX season at Sunny Valley with a flawless 250 wire to wire win . TERRY INDUSTRIES P Box .o. 1321, Hesperi•• CA 92345 714-244-3139 Old Sol smiles on Sunny Valley By Jerry Mathel SUNNY VALLEY , ORE., OCT. 19 Rainy So uthern Oregon skies cleared and Sunny Valley lived up to its name for the opening of its Moto-X season. The pit area took on the appearance of a family reunion as old friends greeted each other and found new ones. There j ust aren't any strangers at this track. Even if you didn 't know a soul you soon had a dozen good b uddies, an invitation for coffee, breakfast o r whatever. Track operator Ray Co peland m akes it a p oin t to get to know every rid er by his first n am e. Rain had left the short, twisty track in primo condition, with a minimum of dust an d a m ax imum of tr action. Kei th Stricklin do minated all three motos of t h e minib ike class with h is box stock Honda X R and on several occasio ns 100 ked like he m ight give the 100s some tro uble. Ya maha mounted Bruce Smylie made it a grand slam in the 10 0 class, co ppi ng all t hree motos. The 175 Junior cla ss was also a three fo r one. Californian Cecil Ari spe , aboard a Yamaha YZ, fought off a to ugh field of riders. Each mo to saw a battle as Kawasaki mounted Troy Arispe, Duncan and Kirk Russe ll (Yam ) scratched for the rlead. : but] each time , Arispe seem ed to kee p right on truckin' as th e other riders t ired and slowe d. The 175 Senio r class was a three way scrap between Ch ris Washburn (Hon), Dave McRae (Yam) and Todd Chestnut (Ho n) but in the final count it was Washburn with two wi ns and McRae o ne. Each of the three had a second. The 250 class was the largest of the day and h ighligh ted by the flawless ride of Bultaco mo un ted Bob Co nners. If the kid ever made a mistake it certainly didn't show. He motored to three straight w ins with his o nly serious challenge co rni ng in the third moto by Can-Am mounted Bruce Harshman. Harshman passed Conners on several occasions but couldn 't quite mat ch Conners' pace and in the last laps decided he had better cool it. Bob Decker took top Open class honors with a brand new Suzuki 370 wh ich certainly has got grunt. Bob grabbed the wins in two m o tos, dropping one to Bultaco mounted Do n Durrant. • Results in Resu its Section. Jammers semi proMX opens Sacto OHV park By Sallee Hilton SACRAMENTO , CAL., NOV. 2 Sacramento Co un ty (somewhat reluctant and skeptical about the whole idea) pu rchased approximately 500 acres o f ru ral property previously known as McGill Cy cle Par k. The park was closed down fo r a year and a half, and has now re-o pened as a motorcycle recreation area. In an attem p t to make the park pay some of its own operating expenses, it was decided to allow clubs and p romoters to run co mpe tit io n events. The first event at S.O.H.V .P., hosted by the Sacramento Jammers M.C. was the co un ty 's first en counter with sanctioned motorcycle competition, and the J ammers p assed the test ! Pat Richter (CZ ) swept the Open Expert class with two wins and no rider . could get close enough to worry him after the first tu m of either moto, Danny Leet. (Mai } was in line for the second o verall pay , but he was p ut out of the race wi th a melted spark plug wire . Eighty Ex pe rts signed up, and 33 of them were in the 250 class. The sign up sheet read like a "Who 's Who." Wayne Reedy (Suz) got the hol esh o t, hotly pursued by Ra ndy Los h (Bul), Do n (Bul), Charles Halcomb Sandretto (Hu s), Kevi n He nry (Bul) and Mike J enn ings (C·A) . Lo sh to o k over th e lead , Reedy wen t do wn , and t he gro up co n tin ued to m ix it up .
