Peterson yodels over the Matterhorn By Ann A. Powell ORANGE, CAL., OCT. 26 The Saddleback Hillclimbers' Association got the fall portion of its hiIIclimbing season underway on the Matterhorn at Saddle back Park. After a four month shutdown, nearly 100 riders came out to challenge this hill. Four months of neglect had done little to m ake the Matterhorn gentle. From six to 10 inches of soft dirt covered th e trail , keeping speeds down and halting forward momentum. Only six riders managed to make it over the top in the first round of competition. Smallest of these was a 250 Bultaco ridden b y Wes Evans, who has built a reputation for doing the impossible over the past few months. Fellow Bultaco rider, Doug Hall, also managed to take his 250 over the top, but not until the second round. Some of the most exciting action of the da y came when several riders managed to get their front wheel over the crest of the 500-foot hill, but hung up in the middle. Although footage is scored by the front wheel's high mark, an over means both wheels must crest. This left several riders with the dubious distinction of scoring higher than the 500-foot high mark and still not getting an over. 18 Ed Shaver, who had gone 503 feet in the 500 Modified class on his Yamaha, came close to a disqualification later because of some very ex cited, new fans. Riding a 750 Triumph in the Open class, Shaver once again got hung up on the top. He was still over his bike and the engine was still running. Some helpful fans rushed from the sidelines to give him a "hand" in getting the bike over the top. It took plenty of shouting by officials to get them off the hill and give Shaver the time he needed to finally work his bike over the top and keep him in competitio n. Shaver went on to take first place in both the 500 Stock and Open classes. With only two small bikes over the crest, spectators soon decided that today the Matterhorn favored Open class bikes. But when all the runs had been completed, it was a stock 400 Maico, ridden by Kerry Peterson, that carried away the top eliminator trophy. The 'Hom will change greatly in the next two months. Th e November cli mb will move to the Hili-in-the-Hole, and it will be late December before the ' Ho m Gary Ogden took a pai r of Suzuk is to a pa ir of wins at AMC Ca rlsbad. Gerald Stewart came out on top in 125 Pro action with a three-two score on his Yamaha mono. The Open Pro cl ass got the day off to a start with Ogden alre ady in the lead, followed by jeff Witherell (Mai) and Mike Foreman (Hus). Foreman zapped Witherell within the opening lap, trying to get a shot at the leading 370RM . But Ogden had put a large margin between himself and the rest of the 500s; until the ninth lap when Gary stalled out just before: the score tower, giving Foreman and Bob Cheever (Yam ) enough time to get by. Foreman finished off the moto in front , with Cheever far enough ahead to hold off Ogden. Th e second rnoto belonged to Ogden, as he left everyone be hind to wonder where he took off too. Foreman ran into some trouble, getting off poorly from the first lap, but was able to work up to third spot for second overall. Martin Baker (Mai ) took second spot in the final for third overall. Ogden made both 250 Pro motos look mu ch like the final 500 moto, Gary grabbed both holeshots and turned them into runaway wins. Meanwhile, the action went on in the first moto. Behind Ogden was jeff Szueber (Yam) and jeff Matthews (C-A) , with FMF's flyer, Mark Tyer, in pursuit in fourth spot. Tyer soon 'go t by Matthews and moved up on Szueber. Tyer fell at the top of the uphill, letting Szueber free to take care of second spot. While Ogden sailed in front of the second rnoto. Tyer and Tamali Smith (Kaw) had a short dice going for second. Tamali took a mean tumble coming over the "horseshoe" jump/comer, getting out-of-shape on the monstrous bumps. 111at left Scott Miller (Yam) to sneak
