The Gingerellis credited th eir finishes, and Dain's clinchin g of the CMC 250 Championship, to tuner Joh n Lassek, Carlsbad is a most unusual road raci ng circuit. It uses a drag strip and some of the slic kest, dirtiest, m ost crooked return road s on earth . The co urse has a well d eserv ed reputation as a rider 's co urse . Sanns CARLSBAD, CAL., NOV. 2 A stock Can-Am TNT enduro bike ended Killer DKW's do min ation of California 125cc Pro duct ion class racing Sunday. The Can-Am easil y won the class, clinching the CMC class championship for rider J ohn Ulrich. Larry Lim, ridin g 26-time class winner Ki ll er DKW , c r a s he d after cen terp unch ing second-place Dick Hewitt (Yam ) on the third lap. Both Hewitt and Lim were well behind Ulrich when they co llid ed in the entrance to an off-camber hairpin. Hewitt did not fall, bu t the incident for ced Lim to DN F. Lee Fleming"won three classes on his Kawasaki 900: Open Production, Open 4-stroke GP, and Super Cafe. "The bike's finally handling right," said Fleming. " Peo ple are coming up to me and saying that I'm riding real ly well today . I'm not rid ing any differently. The motorcycle is j ust wo rking no w." Darrell Lee was th ird in Super Cafe, behind Fleining and Lance Wei! (Lav). Lee rode an RD350 Yamaha with racing slicks, beating a host of larger machines. Jim Haberlin (Tri 750) fought to pass Lee, but crashed when h is bike's chain broke and locked the rear wheel. Haberline ca me back later in th e day to take second in 75 0 Pr oduction behind David Bre etwo r (750 BSA). Flem J uliussen (Kaw) led 10 0 GP until the last turn o f the fi st lap , where r he crashed. Dav id Emde (Hod) ca me from behind to win by a whole bunc h , after pass inS Art Syslo (Yam) and Don Wicks (Yam). Emde also won 250 GP, and took second in 350 GP behind James Vialovos, Randy Riggs was knocked down by an other rider in 250 Production , but p ick ed up his Can-Am T'NT, put the torn-off throttle b ack on, and battled back in to fourth place. Dain Gingerelli (Yam) won. Eager for a rematch, Ging erelli and Riggs entered 350 Production -on their 250s. This ti me a rider wheelied into Riggs on the grid . Las t into the first tum, Riggs passed seven riders o n 350s, and Gingerrelli 's 25 0, in eight laps. The - 16 0 Maxwell, Elliot & La Porte top CMC Carlsbad By Mike Yada CA RLSBAD, CAL., NOV. 9 Bill Rubly padded his points lead by tak ing second 500 Pro after J ennings ran into problems in th e 500 and 250 Pro classes. Danny La Po rte outran Mike Bell fo r 125 top spot, and Robert Elliot nail ed down t he 250 Pro win . Bob Max well trade d off m o ta wins with Rubly to capture t he 500 cash. ."Jeff J ennings star ted the day off in his usual fo rm - out front and pulling away, but his lea d di dn ' t last past the midway mar k. J ennings fried his Bul taco engine, letting Maxwell by , with Rubly close behind. Rubly slipped around Max well to take the checkered first . 0 Maxwell cut down Rubly's lead wit hin tw o laps, taking top spot fro m the ace Maico ve t , cruising in for the overall. She rman Schneller (Suz), fro m up north, sneak ed to a third overall for the day o n his RM 370. CRT's Terry Turner (Yam ) grabbed the hole position in the first 25 0 Pro go-round, but Jeff J ennings (Bul ) and Val Tamietti (Mai) cut him off short in t he first three co mers. J ennin gs he ld th e distance and Tamietti to take the first mota win. Robert Ellio t go t off to a poor start, but he berserked hi s Hu sk y all the way to third before th e rno tos end. Scott Mo ntgomery (Bul) gassed it by Pett y befo re t he end a f the opening lap, and E Ilia t and Jennings were close behind. Montgo me ry soon had to forfeit his lead , as a slowly disassembling rear wheel slowed him off the pace. Jennings got Elliot at the bottom o f th e d ownhill to take over the lead, but a broken frame o n t he next lap gave it all away to Elliot. Tamietti cruised to second. CMC Numero Uno , Mike Bell (Ha n) , led eve ryone out of the gate in t he first leg of the 125 Pro action class, John Tessitore, riding a new Honda, zip ped past Bell on the downhill. but Bell rega ined the lead withi n one lap and Te ssitore dropped ba ck in to the pack. Meanwhile, Danny laPo rte [Fra] got by Dave Taylor (Ya m) to take ove r seco nd, and aimed fo r Bell. laPorte and Bell thrashed it out , wh eel to wheel. LaPorte final ly edged by o ver th e " litt le " drop before the uph ill section . Bell st ayed cl ose , but was unab le to get by LaPorte on the Franks wonder machine. Th e last mo ta went o ff as th e sun set o ver t he Car lsbad hills. J ohn Tessitore sailed out of the gate, leadin g Taylor, Bell and Lal'orte , but h e lo st it after he went through t he fence arou nd t he hairpin. He struggled to get the Elsie u ntangled as Bell and La Porte went by in a wild show for first. LaPorte swept past Bell, but the pair stayed exactly o ne second apart thro ughout th e rest of the race . La Porte ca me o ut on top , ta king an extra lap at the end of the CMC 250 Pro winner, Robert Elliott. He was still in the pit s when th e 250 Pros to ok o ff, but he maneuvered hi s new Bultaco th rough the ran ks and was lead in g b y the fourth lap. He's certainly smoo thed out since he earned the nicknam e " Cra she r ." But it wa s J o e Root (ass) who took the hole shot with Cooke right o n his tail. Root held h im o ff for five lap s, bu t Cooke tried to slip by at the bottom of the big downh ill. In his eagerness, he was too radical , ove rs hot the berm and crashe d . Allan didn 't give up though . He started repassi ng rid ers but -lan ded so hard go ing o ver th e j ump that he blew his rear tire ! Th is left the win to Root, with Pau l Thede (Suz ) in second. In the comb ined 5 00 Amateur/Ex pert division, Amateur Mike Smith (Kaw ) pulle d the lead only to ove rshoot th e third tu m and watch everyone else go by . Lanzarone (Bul) took over th e lead with Joe Suebert (CZ ) in seco nd. Mean while, Jim Con nolly (Bul) was work ing his way up from t he middle of the pack to take over t he lead. J im the n developed his usual share of bike problems (he forgot to tig hten do wn th e top of his carb ure to r) and dropped back. Don Ch en ey (Yam) ca m e through fo r the overall w in , with Su ebert in seco n d. Darren Penrod (Yam) put in a very impres sive second ride as a 125 Pro, havin g moved up from the Mini class. He won th e second mota, afte r having unlap ped himself a fter a fall in the first mota . Connolly m oved up to challenge Louis Dar ling (li on) and Penrod, but his bik e j ust wasn 't pulling Valle y 's ste ep upbill.
