E. Ch ap ters to the M.O. R.E . m ember ship for th eir co nsidera tio n . The purpose was twofold : I. To establ ish an effective an d immediate means o f co m municatio n between th e Cap it ol Offi ce o f M.O . R.E. and the mo torcyclists. This done t hrough the can be rever se-pyram id syst em o f teleph one cal ls. One call fro m Sacramen to to o ne individu al in an area, w ill in t-um gene rate several telephone calls to p ersons who in turn w ill co ntact sever al more persons by te lephone , until the wo rd has reached all c on cern ed m o torcy clists in the area. 2. T o provide 'gra ss-roo ts' invo lveme n t. Examples would be attendance at City Council meetings and Bo ards of Su p erviso rs meet ings on matters of local interest to m ot orcycl ists . Ci ty and County govern ments pay much m ore attention to th e reside nts of their area than th ey do to ' o uts iders ' com ing from Sacr amento. In view o f the eve r-increasing co ntrols and regu lations, as well as land-use prohibitions, at the local levels, it is now imp erat ive that such Chapter s an d local actio n be ini t iated. Kathy Hayes, wife of desert exper t actively Bob Hayes, has be en under taking the establishm en t of Chapters in Southern M.O .R.E . California. Already started, and becoming very active in local land-use and de sert-use matters, are the Orange County M,O.R.E. Chapter and the San Fernando Valley M.O.R.E . Chapter. We are going to move ahead quite rapidly to develop such local chapters in all of the areas of California where bikers are encoun tering problems. These chapters can be come very effective in influencing the legislative votes of both their Stat e and Federal representatives. Both road riders and dirt riders are encouraged to ta ke an active part. Motorcycl ists in t he counties of Los -\ngeles, Kern, San Bernardino, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, Imperial, San Diego , and San Luis Obispo should contact Ka th y (Mrs. Bo b ) Hayes, at 1523 Fifth Street, San Fern an do, CA 9 1340, telephone (2 13) 361-8530 fo r assistance, Motorcyclists from other co un ties should co n tact (916) 444-6680 for M.O .R.E. assistance. Russ Sanford FREE WHEELING Is there any doubt th at motorcycling as we kn ow it is in trouble ? If all th at could happen to us did happen to us, we'd have th e desert closed , th e national and state forests closed, most o f our motorcycle parks (supposedly our own private areas) closed, leavi ng p rac tic ally no pl ace to ride off-ro ad. On -ro ad we 'd ha ve two strokes o utlaw ed , any thing that mak es over 80 dbA exhaust noise outlaw ed, m an dato ry ligh ts -on ,su pe rb ikes, ch o ppers and cafe racers either banned outri gh t o r harassed in to o blivion, and of co urse m an dato ry hel me ts o n o ur heads with th e Feds lo o king fo r new wo rld s to co nq ue r. What I'm dri ving at, is if we all go boogying along with busin ess as usual, very so on it 's not goi n g to be very much fun any more . Fo r any of us, re gardless of what we rid e. On e poin t th at we've been tryin g to make throughout th is issue is th at bi kers are not powe rless. The sy stem that does . us in also provides us with the means to fight back. Mo st of us have shunned th e sy stem wi t h reason, making our own way on our own terms and taking the co nseq uences, go od or bad. Fo r most of us , the die was cast while we were still in our t eens an d we've carried on throughout our young adulthood. ---" I know you're out there . Maybe yo u eu t y o ur teeth on a Supe r Hawk, discoverin g lo w bars and earholin' through the h ills long before "cafe racer" became a buzz-word. Maybe you go t bl own o ff one day by a Metralla and just had to ha ve one. You got one, loved it , rode it h ard, got lai d off, sold it an d co uldn' t a ffo rd ano ther o ne . Then when yo u had money there were no more ne w Metrallas, though yo u heard maybe so me body in th is country m ight build a fast ro ad single agai n . But they didn't, an d now the word is o ut o n the street tw o strokes and th e few remaining Metrallas, Dian as o r Vel o s are vanishing in to the h ands of co llecto rs. May be y ou cut you r tee th on dirt even go t sucked in to a Honda CL77 or a Yamaba Big Bear b ecause th ey had high pipes and looked bad. You go t blown o ff b y a Bultaco again , more than likely, so you got a Matador or a Metisse or a Pursang and went from there into endures, into tri als, into motocross, changing rid es as the machinery got better and the J apanese manufacturers entered the game in earnest. But something was happening. As you got more and more money tied up in sophisticated machinery you found fewer and fewer good places to ride. Now the word is out that environmentalists hate us and want to make us extinct. So here you are, pushing 30 (or 40) and you take your kid to a motorcycle show. You say, " See that Metralla over there? Your Dad used to ride one of those . .. Maybe if you 're good I'll get you a skateboard for Christmas, before they outlaw skateboards". Or maybe it 's: " See that high fashion shopping center go ing up? Bet you wouldn't believe your 01' Dad used to ride motorcycle s on that land, wide open. And there was a downhill so hairy . . • Maybe if yo u're good we'll go hiking together up in San Gorgonio , before they tell us there '5 no more room ... " Is that the way you 're going to let the story end? You 've come all these years refusing to play their games; you've had some good rides and some bad falls along the way, but on balance, it 's been too good to end with a whimper. So now, while yo u're too old to race with the teenyboppers and too young for the Old Timers' class, how about taking time to learn how the game is played. You may think, " Who am I, a maverick motorcyclist, what can .1 do?" To the bureaucrats and the polls, you are John Q . Citizen, age 30-plus, married, 1.3 kids, a part of the most numerous and influential population group in the co un tr y. So learn the ropes, raise your voice, and make yourself heard. Preserve the joy you've known for your kids and your kids' kids. Remain sile n t, and th e " Street Withou t joy " will not be in Vietnam . It will be here. I I I Lane Campbell
