PETERS, MO ., NOV. 2 World Champion Roger DeCoster led a Team Suzuki one-two-three sweep of the St. Louis Trans-AlvlA round with teammates Gerri t Wolsink (three, four) and Tony DiStefano (five, three) trailing in the order. Jim Pomeroy 's day was repea ted disappointment. as he tore the throttle off in a first moto crash. then crashed whi le leading the second moto, lapping an o ther rider. getting up to finish behind Roger. Marty Smith led the fir st moto early. but was chasing DeCoster after mi d-race, eventually putting together a two-seven score for fifth overall behind Kent Howerton (four. five). Another sweep was in the ma king in the Sup port class as Can -Am 's Jimmy Ellis led his mates Mike Ru nyard and Buck Murphy in the tally . The "other" manufacturers have either not acknowledged the DEQ's letters or apparen tly can 't comply with the 83 dBA limits. According to the DEQ, motorcycles other than those certified cannot even be stocked or warehoused by dealers in Oregon after January I, 1976. Those dealers not complying with be subject to a $500 fine. Exceptions to the certified list are "motorcycles used exclusively for sanctioned racing even ts only," If a consumer wan ts to purchase a "race only" machine. the dealer must order it fro m the manufacturer. The co nsumer and th e dealer must then fill ou t a notarized affidavit allowing the DEQ to approve o r disapprove the sale . Out of 34 motorcycle manufactu rers o nly six co nform to DE Q standards. The field consisted of such top names as Russ Collins on his triple-engined, fuel burning 3300cc Hon~a, T .C. Christenson on his double Dunstall Norton and Boris Murray on his big double Triumph. Probabl y the biggest surprise was Boris Murray's other ride. a new triple-engined Kawasaki 750 two stroke ou t of Denco Performance. This bike turned a fantastic 171 miles an hour on Friday. which is almost 10 miles an ho ur over the existing to p gas record held by Terry Vance. On Saturday, when the national began. Boris was co ns isten tly t urn ing in the 168 an d 169 mile-an -hour bracket. setti ng a new world's record. This was ju st the first of two back-to-back races in California.
