Hannah held on for the win with Williams and Malone right b ehind. The Op en cla ss saw Hannah take it after a fight from Craig Rodman. Rodman cam e out of the ga te leading, with Hannah right behind. On th e fifth lap , Hannah pulled even with Rodman and passed h im to take the le ad and the race . By Terri Buchan an CORONA, CAL., OCT. 9 Thursday night open motocross at Corona Raceway came to a close, with high school motocross opening its season on October 16. Shawn Richey (Hon) came through with two moto victories and a second place in the final to take the overall win in the 100 Beginner class. Mar k Ballow (Hod) took second in the first moto, but fell in moto two and ended up last. In round two, hard-charging Keith Hu ghes (Yam) took second, after a third in moto one. Ballow and Hughes both did badly in the final round. Kevin Sigalas (Yam) won the top spot in that race for overall second. Hu ghes picked up t hird overall. . David Williams (Yam) was firs t off the line in the 125 Senior class, Robin Richey (Hon) second, and Bill Taylor (Yam) in third. Richey went off with bike trouble, dropping to las t place. By the final lap, Williams was so far ahead he stopped and ch atted with some friends. Richey, out for the rest of the night with a flat tire, left Williams and Taylor to do battle with each other. Williams led the entire second match , but Taylor wasn't quite as far behind as in the first race. The last mo to resembled the first, without Richey between Williams and Taylor. Danny DeMuth (Yam) moved into a commanding position at the start of the 125 Junior class, with Glenn Page (Hon) as his strongest challenge. Bob Porter (Yam) finished third. In the second contest, Vance Luevano (Hon) edged out the pack at the start, with DeMuth close behind. DeMuth outpowered Luevano by the seco n d lap, and at the fmal lap, Page had also gotten by Luevano for an other sec o nd. Page led the entire final moto, with DeMuth close behind until James Rockwell (Hon) maneuvered into the number two position. Luevano pushed DeMuth even farther back, so he could take the third. Page claimed first overall. DeMuth grabbed second, and Luevano took third. • Wharton tops Beeline ExPerts .By Bill and Gussie Ramsey PHOENIX, ARIZ., OCT. 11 While · the funny cars were doing their thing at Beeline Dragway, Bob Wharton ·and his GP Husky buzzed off with both motos of the Experts Sweepstakes at Beeline Motocross Park. In the first moto, 125 Honda mounted Dave Crawford grabbed the lead and set the pace for the 250s. Not fast enough though. By the second lap, Wharton moved into number two and was leading a lap later. As the gate dropped for the second moto, Carlos Serrano (Hon) gassed it to an early lead, closely followed by . Crawford on his super fast Honda. Wharton again grabbed the lead on lap four and Serrano crashed one lap later. Crawford, pushing his bike to the limits, held off Frola and Bobby Blose (Suz) until he bobbled, allowing both riders to sneak by. The moto ended with Wharton, FroIa and Blose in the top spots. "Double Darin'" Youtsey (Hon) destroyed all of the mini Amateurs and Experts in the first moto , but crashed heavily in the next, finally finishing third overall. In the 250 Amateur class, "F1 ying Phil " Brown put two wins back to back and showed everyone that Maico was still the best way t o go. • Results in Results Section. second moto wire-to-wire, with Mark Marahams second and Mathews third. Petty charged into the final moto lead with Mathews and Foltz right behind. On the fourth lap, Mathews slipped past Petty, only to miss a shift on the last comer and see Foltz go by. The last three laps saw the three riders nearly even, but Foltz won and Mathews ' second clinched the overall win for him. In 125 Pro action, Brad Dutoit easily won the first two motes, It looked like he would make a clean sweep. leading the third moto with one lap to go . But Paul Sendaes (Hon) only needed an instant to get around Dutoit and he made the pass stick. Dutoit took the overall win, w ith Sendaes as runner-up. Results in Results Section. • AMC at OCIR By Dick Vasquez By Ernest Coleman Marland Whaley, Mark Eggar and George Smith, all on 300cc Hondas, finished 1-2-3 In an excellent trial hosted by the EAST IRVINE, CAL., OCT. 22 Jeff Mathews was triumphant in the wild 250 Pro class at AMC's Wednesday night finale at OCIR. AMC motocross will move to Friday nights. Mathews, aboard a Can -Am, took the early first moto lead , with Marty Moates (Suz) and John Petty (Mai) within st ri kin g distance. Going into the third lap, the pair pulled right up to Mathews ' rear fender. A lap later, Moates was leading and Mathews had been dropped to third, and that was the way they finished . Dave Foltz (Mai ) DN F'ed the first moto, but he came ba ck to lead t he Team Honda sweeps Plonker trial ORANGE , CAL., OCT. 19 Plonkers at Saddleback Park. Mike Griffitts [Mon] and Bob Nic kelsen (Hon) finished fourth and fifth respectively. Bernie Schreiber, the ATA Champion, DNF'D. This marked one of the last ATA trials of the y ear that Whaley (1975 National Champion) , Mark Eggar (National No.3), Griffitts (Na tio nal No .8), Schreiber (National No . 10) , Smith (National No. 11) and Belaire (National No. 12) will be competing as AT A Experts. The ATA added a " Nation al" Class fo r 1976 a t their annual rules meeting which will be comp osed of the above AT A ri ders who finished in the top 20 nationally. Thus the remaining ATA Experts including Arizona's top two Experts, Jeff Koskie and Gary LaPlante , will be battling for the ATA No. 1 Expert plate. This should be one of the most fiercely competitive and interesting classes in the ATA in 1976. . The Amateur class was won by Greg carter (Mon) fo llowed by Raymond Soffa (Bul) and Fred Bacher (Bul). Debbie Evans (Yam) one of the best, if not the best, woman trial riders in the U.S.A. finished fourth foll owed by AI Roper on a Suzuki. The resul ts in the Novice class were noteworthy in that Red Collins (Mon) finished fITSt and earned enough transfer points to tum Amateur. Red, who has held the No . One Novice ATA plate for a long, long, lon g time will have to give it up in 1976. Lane Smith (Mon) finished second followed by Oli Thordson (Yam) , Charles Bassett (Bul) and David Webster (Yam) in that o rd er . The Beginner class with 23 entries was won by young David Rofsky (Mon) who transfered to Novice. Michael Lauxen (Hon) took second followed by Maurice de la Lama (Bul) who flew in from Mex ico City just to ride this trial. Maurice, a super trials enthusiast, will also be flying in to compete in the " Big One" - EI Trial de Espana on December 14 at Saddleback. Ken J ones, aided by a large group of Plonkers, laid out a good five mile loop in the rougher areas of Saddleback with good challenging sections that weren't classified as dangerous within their respective classes. An unusually large number of riders commented on how well they enjoyed the trial. One rider suffered a broken leg and another a broken wrist but neither were co mp eting at the time. Emergency Medical Technicians Tom Dailey and Dennis Hobson rendered fITSt aid including splints on the spot. • Results in Results Section. • 35
