the sweeper and was closing on Jones fast, but it was Jones holding on for the win . Land finished second wi th Torres an d Snell following. TIm Smithpeters (Bul) and Steve Monger (Yam) put o n a good show in the 250 Exp ert Main, having an all-o ut dic e out for the first place statuette. Monger took the lead for keeps co ming out of the sweeper on lap two and went on for the win. Smithpeters followed for second by only a b ike length and Steve Podergois (Suz) who ran with the leaders the whole race, finished a close third. Kirk Smith (Suz) took care of an extremely scrappy 500 Expert crowd to grab top honors. Mike Short (Yam), coming from the back and passing everything in sight, took second while Bultaco mounted Lee Hales finished third. • Resu lts in Results Sec tion. Madness in the mud By Jan Newman SANDY , ORE., OCT . 19 Th e' relief we feIt upon arising to find dry ground soon turned to dismay . Th e sky opened up and turned Mt, View Cycle Park in to a 250 Expert Main winner Steve Monger (12q) closesthe door on Derek Land (23L) at Porterville. Indoor short track By Lynne Diltz ROSEBURG, ORE., OCT. 18 C. C. Riders 1975-76 winter bleachers were racing at the 28 launched th eir serie s and the fuIl as Indoor Douglas Coun ty Fairgrounds covered arena got underway . Restart was th e name of the game pl ayed by the 40 odd groups that to ok to the packed, wet sand tr ack. This track hosts a Men' s Mini ; can't call it an Ol d Man's class because riders are 21 and over. Th ey can 't ride any oth er class, so this eliminates som e of the hot-shoe cherry pickers. Heat and elim ination ro unds placed finalists in the new Semi-Pro class . When those guys race for money most anything can happen and usually does. Medford's flyin' Brian Peterson did a lot of winning and took an early lead in the Main but to his surprise, he was p assed by an Oliver, Bill, to be exact. Peterson poured on the coal but couldn't get up enough steam to outrun Jeff Campbell. Campbell made an ou tside run on , Peterson and cap ab ly closed the door into turn three. Peterson settled for third. Those kids and their minis are pushy. There were as many of them back on row two as the bigger guys and their riding was every bit as wild. Don Fowler and Andy Bruhn had a little tussle with the wall, and the wall won. Five out of seven pulled deliberate wheelies off the start of heat three. Andy Bruhn got a C Main placing because of his wall shot; he won th at aft er by -passing Or en T omp kin s and Jake Davenport. Bruhn then came away quick from a seco nd row B Main start to pass Tony Jenkins, and Scott To y to take another win. The 200 class was small bu t .ab solutely wild. Fir st crac k out of th e heats was Bob Th orpe 's upset. A restart had two Roseburg favori tes, Lonnie Ben tley and Doug McWilliams; away in th at order. McWilliams rode Bentley hard and fo und the door open wh en Bentley cam e out of tum two a bit wide and walked away . Bentley was unable to recover and McWilliam s went on to a sur e A Main win. Bob Nicklason took early wings in his 125 heat but lo st out in turn tw o and Del Seitzinger went on to the win . Kirk Howard won the B Main an d transferred to the A but Jeff Cook was letting no one around. Seitzinger cinc he d second and Terry Phillips man aged a third. Scott Miller won it all in the Kids 100 class. Jamie Classen did a lot of ridi ng .he won the B and transferred , and from a second row start, advanced to second by th e last of th e A. Bill Davis held down third as Jim Miller spilled it . Quickly taken notes from the 250 A Main read as fo llows: "Riders down all over; restart; repairs; jumps; another restart ; three down in tum three another restart," Brett Howard took the lead followed by Mark Detwiler and Randy Jordan. Howard and Jeff Cook bit the dust before the main was over, leaving Dewiler, Brian Peterson, Randy Jordan and John Lawton to finish . • Jack J ones (Bul) managed to hold off a very hungry mob of 12 5 Experts for the first place iron. Jones, (leading wi re to wire) took the holeshot but right behin d him was a p ack of Yamahas piloted by Derek Land, Richard Torres, and Duane Snell. Snell go t Torres in the sweeper for third and started gunning for Jones and Land. Land fell victim on lap two and Snell tried for the lead on the inside of J ones in the first turn of the final lap. The attem p t failed when he b obbled leaving the tum , losin g two positions in the process. Land, now in second, had a good drive coming out of Mt. View Cy cle q uagm ire swallo ws another un suspecting victim. Hookin' & cookin' .at Porterville By Cosmic Cat & CO. PORTERVILLE, CAL., OCT. 26 District 35 returned to daytime scrambles for the start of the winter racing series at Porterville. Over 200 riders signed in at the dusty Spinners track. A cloudy day and consistent watering helped hold the moisture on the surface as the day wore on. Mark Hannah (Yam ) worked his way up from mid-pack to ta ke the 50-89cc Novice Main ahe ad of second p lace Eric Armstrong (Hon). Armstrong an d Hannah got by early leader Kevin Peck (Ind) on lap two and switched po sitio ns a couple of tim es befo re Hannah settled it for go od and to ok th e chec kered. gooey sticky m ess. Things might have been better if the rain had co n tinued. It wasn't a day for real compe tition, nor was it a day for feeling any pride or security if o ne we re in the lead. Chances of either being the ne xt to fall or have th e bike su ccumb wer e enormous. Only a few stayed upright and u su ally ended up w inne rs. With rain dripping down their necks and two pounds of mud clinging to their feet , spectators find almost fiendish delight in this type of day. The riders, with amazing durability and good humor, are seldom ab le to at tai n enough sp eed to sustain an y inj ury in the inevitable spills. Little things stand out on a day like th is. Like the really game T urkey riders who for th e most part we re handicapped by far too little experience and sta m ina , an d far too much air in the tires giving them even less traction. Steven Davis (Ya m ) was the victor. At one point in the Mini race there was not a single bike that hadn't ch oked to de ath. After a few minutes of co mplete sile nc e Billy Parker (Ho n ) ma naged to restart and become the winner and t he only finisher. . ~ :< ;: UJ Z z « ..,
