The 12 5 Experts proved to be t he most exciting ra ce of th e eveni ng. Mike Pillar and Jim Hale vied for the lead during the fi st lap, but not even r halfway aro un d , both went down. Bobby Jones grabbed the lead and reall y o pen ed it up putting ei gh t to 10 b ike lengths between himself and the nex t two riders. In the sec on d mota . Jones showed everyone just how fast he really is, whil e playing catch-u p the entire race. He wen t down on the first lap and b y the time he got restarted. was in last place. And y Jannings (lion) and Jerry Shore (Han) were well in front of third place Mike Todd. Then Shore's bike stopped running three different times and Todd got by, as well as Gary Huber (who was making up for a bad start) . J ann ings held on to the overall. with J on es in second and Todd third. For a change, the Beginners really looked like beginners. bar the usual cherry-pi ckers! The perfect example was one 125 rider (no n umbers mentioned save embarrassment) . d id a feet-on-the-pegs crash direct from Laugh-In. as he rounded the co mer to take the checkered flag. •. OCT. 18 The Sch olastic Associati on of Mo torsports (SAM) staged its th ird weekend of High Sch o ol Motocross at Orange Coun ty International Ra ce way and it was again a su ccess. A total of 205 riders in the Saturday day-night sessio n ra ced in doubleheader style with Sonora High taking the da y rounds wh ile heavy power Huntington Beach H.S . scored under th e lights. Runnerup Lowell H.S. too k the evening points lead after t he first ra ce sets were completed when Tony Cotta got the win in Min i Beginner Division I for three po in ts. The lead then swung over to El Taro H.S. after race two when they brought their total to four. However, by race five 's completion, Lowell was back in com mand with a 10 point total with EI Toro five points behind in second. That's wh en the wrecking crew fr om Huntington Beach went to work. Dennis Kunkel and Tim Un derw ood co m b ined for a solid five point showing ~ and Huntin gton Beach members quickl y added eig ht more during th e nex t th ree events. Th ey finally settled for an 18 point total, four more than Lowell and six mo re than th ir d -pla ce EI Taro. So nora d o mi nat ed th e day session. Jeff Vidic (Mai) is back around fifth place bu t is now a record ho lde r at the Irwindale night races as he wo n the 25 0 Pro class fo r th e seventh week in a row. Vidic h as th is tr ack down as well as any body th at has ever put his fo ot into th e n ight circ u it and has proved his dominance sin ce the Nigh t Nationals . Vidic w on all th ree motos in t he 25 0 Pro class as he pulled th e holesho t on every r ace and nev er go t passed. Th e first race saw J ennings pressin g o n Vidic on the first lap until a loud b rea k ing noise was heard from J ennings ' Bul as the primary drive gave up. Th e rest of th e night was all Vidic with Rubly taking seco nd overall for t he night. • Th e show of the night was in t he Open Pro class as the Rokon fo lks put in a surprise moto cross appearance. Ron T urner . picked up a ride o n the a u to m a tic transmission 'crosser and was co nsistently in the top th ree off the line but got outpulled by Dan Barnes (Mai) and Gene Martin (Mai) . Joe Johnston. on a new RM Su zuki. decided to get down to business and he p assed the first three riders to take the lead. Johnston beserked it for the rest of the evening and won th e first two motos and took a second in the last race behind Luke Messer (Mai).
