T om Ha yner (Yam) an d Malcolm Hill (Ya m) hit the ban king together as Q ue n tin Ho gan (Kaw) came off the second row and Bar b ie off the th ird. Barb ie stayed Iowan t he banki ng and got bottled u p in early traffic while Hogan moved t o second within two laps, then ro lle d to a stop at the e nd of the pi t hot lane with d ead moto rcy cle. Barbie , meanwhile, had finally uncorked himself fro m traffic and took out after Hay ner in ea rnest. This turned into one of the best races of the day as Barbie would set Ha yner u p in t he in fiel d, slingsho t by up th e fro nt st raigh t, then ge t repassed as he stayed lo w and Hayne r we n t high o n th e ba nking of turn o ne . They 'd dis appear nose-t ail into t he back sectio n and co me bac k nex t la p to do it agai n. Last lap , Alan led ou t o f th e back section. The tw o d ragged u p th e in fiel d st raight befo re Barbie closed th e door go ing o n to th e ova l a nd held Hay ner by less th an a b ike len gth . Third, back a di stance , was George Chester (Ya m) who also hu ng less t han a bike len gth off Hay ner's t ail t he e n tire dis tance o f the 38 0 Cafe race ; then Malc olm Hill . Don T ointsen (Ya m) , Steve Gilbert (Ya m) a n d Ch uck Stroe h me nger (Ya m ) finished in a fairly ti ght group. Van ce Breese (No r) led th e Open Production class aw ay wi th Miles Rossteusch er ( BMW) and Leif Gustafson (Kaw) for close com pany. Surprisin g Quentin Ho gan st arted out in th e t o p four o n a 400 Kaw asaki triple until a mo men t's indiscretio n at the dogleg return put hi m into th e infield dirt an d down severa l places. He eventually w orked back to fo urth , ma kin g his way th rough a sc ram blin g pa ck of Do c WilC9X (Kaw) , Steve Graham (Due], Do n Basinski (Duc), Ala n Co lli ns (Kaw) and Bill Gol d sb y (Kaw) . Open Cafe was unreal, as Paul Stephenson on a muscu lar Ho nd a four pulled an im mediate lead, fo llowed by Don Stallings' 8 12 Hond a. Stallings fai led to complete t he first lap , as he got o ff outside th e far turn in th e back sect io n , tried to hang onto th e bike t oo lo ng, and wo und up in a shallo w ravine, cracking some ribs. More bi zarre st uff as th e am b ulance ca me o ut at fu ll cha t, p ractical ly ro lli ng off it s tr eads through th e co rn ers. David Ne al (Nor) swooped around Roge r Swim (H. D) and Bill G o ldsby be hin d t he am b ul an ce , th en passed the arnb ulan ce l Wit h the return o f rel ative no rmalcy , Swi m on t h at humongous p avement-wrinkling Ho g go t b ack u p into fourt h p lace, while Ro sst euscher an d Hogan (o n the 400 Kaw agai n) foll owed Stephenson home. We leave our heroes to boog ie off int o the sunset . .. Jeff Steele outlasted and /or o u tran Mike Tidwell a nd J ohn Wincewicz to win 12 5 GP (says he'll be ba ck with h is Honda next time) ; while Dave Emde led J im Vialvos in 250 GP after Mike Baeder an d Harry KIinz man n bo th se ized. . Pat Evans' and Phil McDonald's expecte d place-swa ppin g show in Open GP went awa y with Pat's rear tire; but S tephenson on th at nas ty Honda and Barbie o n his TZ hel ped m ake u p fo r it wh ile Brian O ' Ne ill o n a shoe-stri ng Ho nda fo u r held Breese and the BS A by less th an a b ike len gth every lap but t he last o ne. Gen eral co nsensus was this was the m o st easy go in g, rel axing y et fu n ro ad ra ce sin ce (maybe) Aspen .
