Going into the fin al moto , Mo ates had a p air of sec o nds so h e left t he gate hard in th e t hi rd m o lo with J o hn Smith (Suz) right be h ind. Smith had had a lit tl e troub le in t he first two motos wi th a t hird and a sixth . The two r iders battled for most of the race un til th e fourth lap wh en Smith went to work an d p assed Moates (Suz) to take the lead fo r a lap . Moates w anted bad ly t o win as he put o n the gas to pass Smith going in t o the last lap . Mo at es ke p t o n to p for a close wi n that put h im in a tie for firs t with Mark T yer wh o had won the fir st tw o m otos. Under AMC's Oly m pic sco ring sy st em, Moates' fin al mo t o win gave him th e money . In th e 25 0 Ex pe rt action Gary Ogd en (Suz) won th e fir st tw o motos and finished second in th e final. Gary 's first two win s were virt ual ly tro uble-free . In th e last one, h ow ever, Mart y Mo a tes (Suz ), who h ad won the 125 Pro class, di d a j o b o n Gary.
