Local hotline Foland (KTM) and Messer to take command of first within three laps. Foland stayed close to Jennings, but was unable to get by. At the midway point, Jennings tossed his chain on the uphill, allowing Foland to scoot into the lead. The second mota had Jennings grabbing top spot from the start gate. Jeff lost his seat coming around for the opening lap, but that didn't stop him from holding off Foland. Jennings held off the San Diego jet for almost half the mota standing on the pegs, but had to give way, letting Foland by for the win. Ron Self (Suz) got around Escondido Suzuki's "Rokon" Ron Turner for third sp at and third overall, while the Turner finished off in fourth overall. Jennings stood up to take home second. Powell SUNNYMEAD, CAL., OCT. 12 Once again, today's climb at De Anza Cycle Park was held on a virgin hill, one never be fore scaled by two wheels. The brush was thick just 30 feet from the first footage marker and bikes had to break trail from th at point. Several newcomers managed to Riding seat-less in the second 500 Pro moto was only one of the many problems Jeff Jennings had at CMC Carlsbad. Glover, Elliot & Foland cash in at CMC Carlsbad "Now wh ere did I leave those footpegs?" wonders Broc Glover, the 125 Pro winner_ work their way be yond the first b ush es, including George Justus on a stock 175 Yamaha. His run looked good enough for a first until regular, Alice Hudnall powered her Yamaha seven feet higher in her second ron. HI 've never been beaten by a broad before ," complained Justus, "but she's damn good. Just wait until the next climb!" Another newcomer, Fred Gregory mounted on a Yamaha in the 250 stock class, had better luck. His first time out, he managed to take first place away from the regulars. It looked like the hill was less of a problem than was expected when Wes Evans on a modified 250 Bultaco managed the first ride over the top. No one gave it a thought that such a small bike could score an over. The mark held, and the 250 modified class was tied up in Evans' first run. He jumped class and managed to pull off a first place in the 360 modified class on the same bike, but couldn't take it over the top on either run . It wasn't until the very competitive 400 modified class came to the line that the second over of the day was scored. The top man? None other than Evans , this time on his 400 Suzuki. Again, he was the only man over in the class, a fete he repeated in scoring the third over of the day, this time in the 450 modified class . By the end of the first round, Evans was the only man to go over the top, and he had done it three times on two different bikes! Another new rider, Butch Couture mounted on a modified 500 Yamaha, was up for his second run. His first run was an unimpressive 221 feet, totally aut a f the running in his class . He cranked on the throttle and aimed his bike for the top of the hill . With hardly a pause, he topped the hill in a cloud of dust. The spectators went wild! To see someone go over the top at this point in the race was exciting. To see a new rider go over the top in his first climb was spectacular. Couture was the undisputed winner of his class , and now in the running against Wes Evans for th e top eliminator spot. The final surprise of the day came when the last man to ride in the 650 modified class, Ron Saffel on his big Triumph, also breezed over the top. No one in th e Open class could match Saffel's run and that put the final competi tion between the three riders who had managed the impossible. Each rider who tops the hill has a chance in the run off and Evans, Couture and Saffel came to the line . Riders have two tries at the hill, and Evans had a decided advantage. Both Saffel and Couture had already missed once and they had only one miss left. Evans, who had topped the hill in three classes, carried only two misses of a possible six going into the final round. By Mike Yada Newcomer Butch Cout ure took bo th the 500 Stock and Modified classes at the DeAn za h illclimb . No te the padd le t ire on the back. CARLSBAD, CAL. OCT. 26 Jeff Jennings had his share of bad luck as bike problems sunk his chances at both the 250 and 500 Pro overall wins. Jeff Foland took 16 the 500 Pro win after a close battle with Jennings, while Robert Elliot was able to hold off the Bultaco ace for the 250 Pro win. DG's hot shot Broc Glov er emerged with the 125 Pro honors. Glover flashed off to a fast start, with Danny LaPorte right on his tail . LaPorte soon got his Frank's Honda around Glover to take command of the first mota lead. LaPorte appeared to be making it a runaway, but only seven laps into the mota a rod went crashing through the cases. That left Glover to retake top spot, while Ron Turner (Yam) made his way from a seventh-place start to second, getting by Mike Tripes (Han) and Alan Smith (Han). Turner couldn't close up the ten-second gap, leaving Glover to take the checkered with a fair lead. The second mota was FM F's turn at the high-strung pace, with Warren Reid screamin' it out of the gate in front of Glover, Smith, and Ted Weeks (Han) . Glover tried to put the pressure on Reid, but Reid maintained his distance, _ sailing his way to the mota win. Meanwhile, Weeks had a war going with Turner for fourth spot behind Smith. Weeks was able to hang on as Turner slowed off the pace. Glover clinched the overall win with a 1-2 score, while Weeks' second mota fourth spot was enough to claim second spot. Ron Turner snatched third overall , while Alan Smith tallied up a 5-3 score for fourth. MCE Strate-Trac spe cialist Tom Settle (Ilon) filled up fifth spot. Val Tamietti (Mai), of TNT, lit it off in the first 250 Pro mota, with Robert Elliot (Hus) and Bill Rubly (C-A) close behind. Elliot soon began to apply the pressure on Tamietti, edging up on the Maico hot shot until Elliot finally got by him the downhill. Jeff Jennings (Bul) started off in dead-last, but he was gassing it harder than any of the front runners. Jennings quickly made his way through traffic until he finally achieved second at the end of the mota. Tamietti once again led the pack out of the gate. This time Jennings got off to a much better st art, tailing Elliot through the first lap. Elliot and Jenning soon made their way around Tamietti . Jennings soon found a hole as he swooped around the outside of Elliot in a tight corner, only to lose his lead 300 yards later when he broke the spokes from the Bul's rear wheel. Elliot then breezed to an overall victory, with Tamietti second. Kenny Frost (Suz) led off the first 500 Pro mota, but Luke Messer (Mai) soon took car e of that, taking it away around the first hairpin turn. Jeff Jenninj(s worked around both Jeff
