It worked like this: riders lose points according to early or late arrival at ch ec ks but assume a new scoring reference (like a new riding number) for the following section and start the next section "on time. n The re sult is non-accumulative late (or early) time fro m check to check; and, therefore, less riding over your head to catch up , fewer disqualified riders, and better overall scores.
