All the time Dale's bee n ridin g. he's been tagging along behind Dave Ho leman. I'm not sure just when Hol em an got to be an " A " rider, but I believe it was in the Eisenhower administration. Anyway, in this run A riders had to ride ear ly numbers, so Dale and Dave got split u p. Dale had to do his own timekeeping, and he wound up winning the class. This was very dis tressing to lit tle Deb bie Evan s, who was th e only girl to co mplete the cour se an d wh o missed a tr oph y in the 200 class " by one "place. But ch eer up, Debbie. This win will probably make Dale an " A " rid er , and he 'll go back to letting Holeman keep time for him and won 't b e a threat to anybody any more. Except maybe me ? About 400 riders entered the enduro. I tal ke d to ab out 25 of them picked more or less at random and was unable to get any cri ticism of the even t whatever. It was tough , but not too tough , and n ot in ordinately dangerous. Co nsidering the difficulty, n o one would have liked it any lo nger. Marking was ex cellent, clocks and distances were right on, and there were no protests. There were ' no serious accidents reported by the ti me I had left. Scoring was co mpleted by Sa turday , and the tr op hies were awarded on Su nday. It seems like every one of my prec onceived no tio ns was wrong and the U.E.A. is off to a flyi ng start . Even tho ugh the U.E . A. di d specify that Loop One was 'for C riders, th ey p ersuaded so me real beginners not to enter because of the difficulty. Th ey are going to hold a mu ch more moderate even t in February. It will be on a Sunday and they hope all the family riders will attend . Profits will go to either th e defense fund or one of the rescu e-communications grour.s, Now if th ey can just resist the im p u se to call it something lik e the 'Ph am ily Phun Phrolic , or th e E-Z 'N u ff Phunduro , it should be perfect, • Results in Resu lts Section.
