Ellidge held o ff an ever pressing Ed Moor and previous mo ta win ner Mike McGowan , finally winning one for the "gipper." Pennsylvan ia 's Kenn y Adams (C Z) pulled o ff an easy three straigh t in the Open even ts. He got the starts and he wa s consistent. It was Pr ovost (Mai) who s~ayed on his tail thro ughout each mota and p ic ked up seco nd fo r his efforts. At the Awar ds Ce remony afte r th e races, when th e trophies had been presented to the first place finishers, Warren Daoust, President o f Bombardier Ltd. informed each o f th e winners that th ey m ay have the Can -Am m o torcycl e of their ch oice (n o t to include Jimmy Ellis' bike) as an additional trophy. Big Creek amateur clash By Gary Hansen SOMMERVILLE, TEX., OCT. 12 Th e mini class provided all of the excitement at the start of the secon d race of the Texas Amateur Motocross Champion ship Series at 20 Big Creek MX Par k. Mini Master Bucky Houston had hi s hands fu ll with J immy Bradden (Yam) as th e pair d uelled far afield o f their co mp e titio n. Ho uston took his Honda to a win in th e first mota , but in the second go-ar oun d Bradden grabbed the lead and held it un til five feet from the finish line. Ho us ton m ad e hi s move to pass right at the flag and Bradden grabbed a big handful and unloaded before he co uld cross th e line . Ho ust o n to ok first ove ral l with Bradden recovering to pus h across fo r second. In t he 125 Novice class Mark Elliot (Han) wo rk ed hi s way up fro m fo urth to take th e lead in bo th m o to s and th e overal l ahead of Reid King (Suz) , David Vincen t (Ya m). and Ron Mayfi eld (Yam ). The first m o ta o f th e 250 J un io r class saw a huge pile-up that sprung Mar k Brown (Yam) in to a giant lead . Priddy 's borrowed Yam mer ove rhea ted, han din g the lead to Fo us t, who then threw a ch ain, leaving Jordan with the win , ahead of a rapidly -improving Mark McD onald (Suz). J o rdan and Foust fo ugh t furi ously fo r th e spotlight in round two in a good show for sponsor John Kim brell. Jordan appeared at the chec kers first to sweep th e class. Consistency paid fo r Dickey N owell (Pen), wh o took second . an d also fo r third-place Jeff Krin g (Yam ), wh ile Foust (7-2) ended fo urth. It turned out a good day fo r 125 In te rmediate Mike Athens (Han). who , in th e ab sence of Allen Pope held o ff J oe Wol fe (Han) and Kent Smith (Yam) for first bo th times. Another two-mota . sweep was turned in by J o hn Rubin (Suz) in 250 Intermediate racing , desp ite the efforts of cha rgin g seco nd p lace r Sco tt Beamis (Yam ). In 125 Novice classes, Kirk Sp encer (Ya m) had li ttle pressure in Division II , while Division I was a battle to th e fini sh , resulti ng in an endo at th e chec kers by winner Davi d McKelvy (Kaw) , who made a spectacular ending to h is u pse t of firs t-ro und winner Rick Gore (Ya m) by be ating his own bike acro ss t he fini sh line . A field of 22 in the 250 Expert class was agai n left to scrap for second by Pento n-powered Bo bby Pickard, wh o sp ed away in both motos.
