CYCLE PARTS 16 WATCH FOR OUR NEXT BIG SALE IN THIS PAPER Wayne Garrett and Tim Bowman - a pair infamous for leading and th en breaking held things toge ther and fin ished one -two at the DRA Hare Scrambles. Garrett (400 Yam) led the race to the smokebomb with Morgan Malocc o (400 Yam ) right behind him. Mal occo soon seized, leaving seco nd and third to Bill Conroy (4 00 CZ) and Jamie Avels (4 00 Yam). Avels had his chain come off and while he repaired it, Bowman (400 CZ) and a few o t hers slipped by . Garrett held less than a minute 's lead over Co nr o y wh en th ey co mpleted th e first tour of the 3 0·mil e lo op . Bowman was righ t behind th e pair and Avel s had worked h is wa y back to fo ur t h,. As the radio chec ks repo rted th at Garrett was still in the lead , people were surprised. When it came across the airwaves that Bowman had passed Conroy in a can yon just past th e bomb, surprise turned to shock. Conroy is usually unbeatable in the can yons. Garrett was unable to pull any distan ce on Bowman, but he did finish , for only the second time thisye ar , and in th e lead to boot. Malocco had wo r ked on Wayne's bike, setting up the piston fairl y loose and installing a chain te nsioner. It worked, but maybe Morgan should have spent more time on his own machine. Garrett got $100 for the win, but he may have to quit racing unless he can fin d some sort of sponsorship. Bowman was deligh te d at fin ishing, the firs t time sin ce March. TIm has p icked up a ride on Kevin Hasten 's old five-speed 4 00, riding out of L & R Cycle. Conroy finishe d third , still in the money. . Am ateur Ro bert Dec ke r (25 0 Yam), who hadn't rid de n in five m on th s, was ru nning sixt h on th e first loop. He got by To m Kelly (125 Yam) and was charging wh en h e sigh ted Avels j ust be fo re th e fini sh . Maybe Jamie wasn ' t ex pe cting any t hing , .b ut Decker blit zed by him a scan t 10 yards fro m the fin ish TIm Bowman was happy about finishing his second race in a year' s worth of trying.
