McWhorter got by Pearson o n lap fo ur for third an d start ed closing on Guthrie for sec on d. Positions held except for Pears on wh o lost fourth to Fr ank Ad am o on lap 10 . Eklund won with room to spare , Guthrie sec o nd. McWhorter third and Adamo fourth. Ted Davi dson (Yam), fresh off his On ta rio vict ory, cap t ured the Novice Main ah ea d of top Novi ce Vince Mead. Davidson had be aten Mead earlier in th e heat as they finish ed on e-two. Third he at winner Don Roberts o f Clovis took the o!,ening lead with Davidson and Paul (Boo Boo) Anderson following. Roberts was holding hi s lead until lap three wh en his en gin e went sour and Davidson move d int o first . Mead was now in thir d and on lap fo ur went to th e inside o f Anderson to take second. By this time , Davidson , with flawless riding, h ad put abo u t eight bike lengths be t we en himself and Mead. Dan Ford led his Purs ang for the first lap of the 250 but retired, leaving j ack Jensen in charge on the new I 25 RM. That was short-lived as a crash put Bill Risner j ust in front of Silva . Silva took the lead until lap 15 when Tex Collingwood charged into the lead on a Selby Montesa. He appeared to have it all together until the front shocks gave up. , Bill Risner set the pace in the Open over a returning Jensen (Suz). Gary Vanderpool was riding his SK Bultaco gingerly in fourth still suffering from a crash with Risner in the last round. Vanderpool worked around the pack to take the lead from Jensen on lap six bu t let Tim Navarro by on the MotaVilla . Some stops just before the halfway mark put the Koss/Hart 400 in the lead and on lap 30, the MotoVilla retired leaving Vanderpool still running, now in second over the Stapleton /Ford Pursang. Except for one gas stop for Vanderpool and a catch up , the scene changed Ii ttle for the first three on the 54 lap Main. Three laps back , a battle fo r the last half of the race raged between Jim Willis and h is partner Pete Cruttendon against Bill O'Brien and Pete Conner. O'B had led th e early part but the younger team with Willis on the 350 XL got by . • Results in Results Section. heat winner Eddie Wirth. Dorsch, riding the o u tside groove , pressured Berry the first couple of laps but on lap three, Berry, preferring the inside groove , began pulling away and went on to win uncontested. Late in the race Wirth began an argument with Dorsch over second. Wirth got his wayan lap 13 by staying to the inside. Dorsch hung close and coming out of the final turn of the race, the two Harleys we re side by side. Dorsch took second by inches. Dennis Briggs (Yam) stayed ahead of Pau l Bostrom (H-D) for fourth. Th e Junior Main had all the top talent of the West with first heat winner Steve Eklund and his rival for top Junior Dan McWhorter, pl us recen t mile winners Frankie Adamo (Yam) and Scott Pearson (H-D). It was nearly impossible to find the leader o n lap one as Pearson, McWhorter, Ek lund, and Pat Guthrie (BSA) were bunched up going Danny Castelhano surprised a bunch of 360 Experts with a wire-to-wire win in the second to last Wednesday night short track - series. Rocky Malynn tried to tie up with the Fremont flash but it was all show for the little kid with Tony Alves in for third over Don Bailey and John Tavis. In the hunt for high point honors 360 Juniors Errol Longboya and Rich Luhdorff are just a few points apart and next week will decide the tale. Longboya won tonight with Eric Weisler second over Luhdorff. Next round if Longboya wins and Luhdorff gets a third, it 's over. Sand track MX at Spillway Racers watchin' racers at a recent meet on Santa Maria's Spillway Park, with the high sand cliffs in the background. Desert racers could dig it - the whole area is one humongous sandwash.
