ravine, firs t lap , he already had five seconds on Schwalenberg (rid ing wh at loo ked like a c on verted TL-125), John Smith, Tryon, Barsurnian, Tom Brundy and Bob Thomas. Jeff Frost got up into the lea d five, fell a t the bottom of the small dropawa y , picked up and in the top 10. co ntinued. still Zimmerman worked up from n owhere to fifth , p assin g Tryon late in the rac e. Sm ith push ed a dead bike across t he fin ish line to sco re 19 t h. Next moto , Feck waved bye-by e agai n, Sm ith and Tryon went bar-to-bar behi nd him , Schw alen be rg, Zimmerman an d Barsumian p oking for an ope ni ng. Second lap , Bren t Dix on en doed in th e sloppy stu ff o ff o ne of th e j um ps, Bob Thomas di d a number over Dixon 's bi ke (o r ar ound it, hard to tell ) and had to be tr an sported for tre atment o f a possible broken leg. Smith , Zimmerman; Try on and Ba rsumian went pass·repass several times durin g the moto, getting alternately bunched up and st ru ng ou t agai n until somebody 'd !(e't a second wind and charge again. Final tally , Smith, Zimmerman, Schwalenberg, Barsurnian , Tryon ; with Feck long gone. The 250 pack was sm all and scrapp y , o ne Ducati and the rest Hondas. On - each sta rt J am es Ho ke and J oh n Hartwell wou ld get a holeshot, go wid e o n t he first tu rn and th en cut ac ros s th e wh ole pack in to th e lead . Ho ke crashed mightily on the big downhill, rolled, bounced up and restarted to ca u tiously finish sixth in the first moto. He unbent his bars, pegs, whatever and scarfed a second n ex t time. Bo th motos , Bob Sherwood came out of mid-pack to win by a comfortable, almost calculated m argin . Bill Risner went three-three for second overall, and St an Flanders of Speedway Only (?) rode the Ducati to score four- five , even though h e fell down a time o r tw o t rying to figure ou t the slippery bowl-shaped berm just before the little dropaway. the Open Biggest class was Sportsmen, 32 of 'em into the first tum and wh at lovely thunder! Keith Petrangelo (CCM) put it on everybody wire -to-wire the first moto with Bruce Bornhurst (Ho n ), Bobby Morse (BSA ) and Larkin Wi~ht (T ri) strung behind. Kelly Milligan (BSA) came up th ro ugh the pack for a second, just ahead of Wight, who was giving a Triumph twin ex -fire-reader an un believabl e ri de. Second moto Milligan dogged the early lead er for about two laps and co mfortably took it ahead of Petrangelo. Wigh t hu ng unto third un til late mo to when Ro n Peters on sn uck by. Op en Pr o first m oto , who bu t Mike McG o wen (fo rme r 25 0 Amateu r Paci fic poin tleader] j umped into th e lead , o nly to lose it in t he fourth lap wh en his chain broke . Then it was fo xy 01' Rol f TIbblin (CCM) leading until both Chuck Pettigrew and Gunnar Lindstrom (both on Ho ndas) b lew by hi m on the downhill . Gunnar kept the pressure on Pettigrew, closing in the ro ugh , watchirig Chuck gas it away on the downhill until the last lap, when he slipped by near the finish line. Second ' moto, Rolf holeshot everybody, but Mike Foreman (w ho later DN F'd ) muscled by in the early choppy st u ff. Rolf took it b ack three lap s later on the gnarly stairstep downhill, only to lose it to Lindstrom near the same place , later. Rolf got it ba ck again a lap or two later, as Pettigrew, Gene Cannady, and McGowen circu lated together further b ack. Gunnar pressed right to th e last lap , but didn't really need it , as a second this time was good enough fo r the overall. "Old Ti mers" J erry Fo reman (CeM) and Dick Smallwood (Ho n) split a pair of motos but Earl Nichols (Ho n) won the class on consistency with a two-two. Whil e t hey were fresh , these guys who cu t their baby teeth on thu mpers really loo ked good, Fo reman and Nichols, especially had a good race goi ng in the first mo to until Earl, leading, go t high o n t hat tricky be rm before th e li t tl e dro paw ay and flopp ed. He was st ill grinn ing when he finished second jus t ahead of Ron Bailey. Next mo to Sm allwood go t a clear lead and extended it, getting cheer s an d e xchanging p eace signs with his gallery atop th e second uphill. Somehow it all fit. • Resu lt s in Res ults Sec tion.
